Seemingly shot down by a SA-11 SAM. Ukraine says the rebels did it, both Ukraine and Russia operate that system.

This is actually the second plane which has been shot down in Ukraine recently, after the Russians had reportedly destroyed a Ukrainian jet fighter yesterday evening. Maybe the Ukrainians decided to strengthen their air defences and got a little too nervous.

Which raises the question why civilian passenger planes are still allowed to fly in that area in the first place...

Well obviously it's the government's responsibility to warn the public if they're just going to start shooting down planes at random.

I know this may seem redundant but why is it always Malaysian Airlines?

Pretty bitter for the airline. Two major accidents in a matter of months, and the airline might not be responsible for either one.

Truly unfortunate.  Thoughts and prayers with the families of the passengers.

I hope there weren't too many Americans on board, but NATO citizens will likely make up a large part of the passenger manifesto Sad

I don't want to start a dispute in a thread like this, but I find this type of sentiment to be pretty disgusting.

Almost 300 people have been killed. What does it matter whether they have an American or a Malaysian passport?

Make no mistake, any loss of life at this scale is a great tragedy.

However, if a large number of the passengers are American or Western European then the incident probably has a bit heavier political implications, and I don't think expressing that sentiment is inappropriate given that this is a political forum.

Ukraine is also denying doing anything, but I don't see anything saying Russia also denied doing anything.

That really isn't casual racism, though. Malaysia just doesn't have the dog in this fight that the United States and the other NATO powers do (I'd argue that we don't have a role and should not support the Ukraine, but alas, I am not the guy in charge of things). The Obama administration will release a statement condemning the attack if no Americans are killed. If Americans are killed, you can expect the administration to be strongly involved in this situation in the future. It's just the way it works.

The plane was shot down over eastern Ukraine, but I have only been listening to the TV in the other room and don't know if it is over rebel territory or not.

Found this, but who actually controls the area isn't clear.

Both Bloomberg and Interfax quote the Ukrainian Interior Ministry as saying 23 US citizens killed.

According to the Austrian newspaper "Der Standard", the official twitter account of the "People's Republic of Donezk" (the self-proclaimed "state" of the rebels) has just deleted a tweet from June 29, in which they proudly presented their new air-defence vehicles:

There's also footage of the rebels boasting about shooting down a Ukrainian plane...which turned out to be the commercial airliner. Too bad for them that the internet never forgets anything.

The British government has called for a session of the UN Security Council over this.

Anyway, if it turns out that the rebels shot down a plane with 23 American citizens on board, the United States could end up expanding its military assistance for the Ukrainian government.

Which of course would result in the conspiracy nuts claiming that the CIA did it so that US government had a justification to expand military assisstance.

That's kind of like calling a session of the police commission to investigate the police commissioner.
