Translation: It's Ukraine's fault that the plane was shot down over a country we destabilized and partially annexed in an area controlled by rebels we support and supplied state-of-the-art Russian missile launchers to.

What an effing POS.

Apparently American and European authorities warned airlines not to fly over eastern Ukraine some time ago, but most of the airlines ignored them because it's cheaper to fly the shortest route and save fuel:

Here's a snapshot of air traffic taken from hours after the crash, showing how flights suddenly started flying around Ukraine once this happened:

It's also interesting to note how flights are avoiding Syria and the Sunni areas of Iraq.

Yet, if this happened in Chechnya, there is no doubt than Russia would blame terrorists, not themselves.

Why do I feel like that all these planes bunched together isn't going to end well?

Also MH is offering all flights free until July 25th. They seem done for.

Why such a strong preference for Iraq over Iran?

You do realize that planes aren't as big as they may appear to be on that map.

Are those flights to/from the Gulf States?  I imagine that relations between Qatar and Iran aren't so great right now.

If I didn't just go to New Zealand I'd definitely consider randomly hopping to Malaysia.

I was interested to see this:

People keep being surprised that planes were allowed there, but, yeah, everyone realized how complicated it was, and made sure any planes passing overhead were not targetable... by anyone who didn't decide to launch a military-grade missile at any of the planes.

Yes, I do...

As for the flights... that's an error on my part. They will waive all fees regarding changing flights, at least according to a tweet by the BBC.

So, friends of mine who were with me in NZ this week, left today and when they arrived in Sydney this morning, they saw airport staff running around changing the channel away from News and ordering businesses in the Airport to do the same.

Understandably, mass panic at an airport would be horrific and isn't necessary when everyone can access the news in their hands anyway, with the context an article provides.

I like the idea that this was meant as a cover for the invasion of Gaza, if only because of my "conspiracy theory" that Russia hijacked MH370 to divert world attention from... the Ukraine. Poor Ukraine, and poor Malaysia, I suppose. But seriously, these guys are flailing. Putin didn't even try to give a valid reason for blaming Ukraine.

Usually Russia et al can get away with these sorts of things because of "South-South solidarity"  and all that but this is all so blatant that they'll be backed into a corner. You wonder, for example, how they intend to keep the black box. At the very least, this is going to make Russia unpopular in parts of the world. I mean at this juncture it's reasonably clear what happened so we just have to see how this plays out, and hope it can hasten the end of the conflict in Ukraine.

It is going to see how this affects the Netherlands. This must be the most Dutch civilians killed... since the war, I imagine? I'd be shocked if it doesn't have a permanent effect. But as for the TVs... I'd prefer that, yes.

EDIT: Actually I suppose the Tenerife disaster would actually qualify- how many of the victims were Dutch?

EDIT: And we've all seen this, right?

Pathetic. I mean one has four engines and the other two! I'm sure they get off on intimating the Ukrainians are mentally challenged but this is beyond belief.

Yeah, because the Russian Presidential plane would totally fly over Ukraine. Not to mention that such an action would result in the Russian invasion and total occupation of the entire Ukraine.

But wait, Russia isn't our enemy unless we "make them our enemy" remember? Remember Atlas posters who argued that? Remember?

When will people realize geo-politics is a cynical zero-sum game that you have be willing to play in order to win. I want Kennedy and Johnson back. People who were economic and social liberals but also understood how foreign policy works in real life and that nice guys finish last.

Because geo-political hipsterdom is the latest fad. Anyone who is against "the West" is automatically a good guy. No matter what.

Who besides Snowstalker or TNF, who are always going to be all "muh nazis", is not denouncing these people. The Russians are very clearly the war criminals. And with that I guess I ought to get to sleep to prepare for what horrors we have planned for tomorrow.

The New York Times has graphics showing flight paths from the past week, which illustrate how some airlines have been flying over Ukraine, while others have been avoiding it:

Okay, this is it. The Western governments have tolerated this pro-Russian bullsh*t for too long. Now, we've got 298 dead civilians, who had absolutely nothing to do with this conflict.

Something needs to be done. Something serious.

We can't.

German businesses do too much in Russia to allow Merkel to do something.
Russians have invested too much money in UK to allow Cameron to do something.
Obama won't do anything as long Europe won't allow him.

I think European countries should take a clear stance. Either you're with us, either you're with him. You're with him, we seize your assets.
