This is actually the second plane which has been shot down in Ukraine recently, after the Russians had reportedly destroyed a Ukrainian jet fighter yesterday evening. Maybe the Ukrainians decided to strengthen their air defences and got a little too nervous.

Which raises the question why civilian passenger planes are still allowed to fly in that area in the first place...

The British government has called for a session of the UN Security Council over this.

Anyway, if it turns out that the rebels shot down a plane with 23 American citizens on board, the United States could end up expanding its military assistance for the Ukrainian government.

Which of course would result in the conspiracy nuts claiming that the CIA did it so that US government had a justification to expand military assisstance.

RT - is trotting out a conspiracy theory that MH17 was confused for the Russian Presidential jet... So it seems the Kremlin is spinning and deflecting HARD

Wait, Putin is planning to visit Ukraine?? Tongue

BBC reports that Ukrainian separatists have handed the plane's black box over to Russian authorities for analysis in Moscow.

Awesome!

Among the victims of MH17 were Joep Lange, former president of the International AIDS Society, and WHO official Glenn Thomas.

Putin is not insane and it seems to me that the desire to declare him insane stems from the human habit of demonizing "the enemy".

Putin is surely a guy who thinks that the end justify the means, that you have to break some eggs in order to make an omelette, and that collateral damage is acceptable. If this makes him insane, than the majority of world leaders in history were insane too (and I'm not talking about Hitler).

The Russian government is trying to edit wikipedia articles on the incident.

That's very Stalinist of them.
