Make no mistake, any loss of life at this scale is a great tragedy.

However, if a large number of the passengers are American or Western European then the incident probably has a bit heavier political implications, and I don't think expressing that sentiment is inappropriate given that this is a political forum.

That really isn't casual racism, though. Malaysia just doesn't have the dog in this fight that the United States and the other NATO powers do (I'd argue that we don't have a role and should not support the Ukraine, but alas, I am not the guy in charge of things). The Obama administration will release a statement condemning the attack if no Americans are killed. If Americans are killed, you can expect the administration to be strongly involved in this situation in the future. It's just the way it works.

Ukraine is also denying doing anything, but I don't see anything saying Russia also denied doing anything.

The plane was shot down over eastern Ukraine, but I have only been listening to the TV in the other room and don't know if it is over rebel territory or not.

Is Putin a cold, calculating, and evil man hell bent on power? Yes. Is he, as Snowstalker said, an expansionist dictator? Yes, he is. But Putin is not anymore likely to press the button than the Iranians are.
