What if Hillary Rodham Clinton decided to resign as Secretary of State in the fall of 2010 and announced her primary challenge to President Obama in the upcoming Democratic primary of the 2012 elections ?

It would be one of the most nastiest, bitter campaigns ever in history: Hillary pulling her inner Goldwater and attacking racial quotas (which pisses off minority voters) in her outreach to Blue Collar Voters in her attempt to do the Dem version of the Southern Strategy. She also announces her support of Voter ID Laws.

The Obama campaign blasts Hillary's race-baiting tactics and call on her campaign to stop putting fear into the American people.

Meanwhile on the GOP side, Texas Governor Rick Perry (R) announces he's NOT running for President in 2012: he'll focus on his current job in the TX Governor's Mansion and he's endorsing former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney (R).

Assuming the Hillary Democrats are pissed off at Obama and stay home for good during the general election.

Obama, obviously. He's the incumbent and had strong approvals among Democrats, and Hillary would look even worse by stepping down from the cabinet just to challenge him.

The story would be different if she stayed in the senate though - she wouldn't seem as hypocritical by serving in his cabinet then opposing him as a member of his administration.  In the Senate she could take leadership roles on healthcare reform, etc. and maintain a higher visibility

Hillary would really sh**t the bed if she tried that. It would have been hilarious to see.

It's going be negative. More negative then in 2008. But Obama is likely going to be hurt like Carter and be defeated by Romney.

Hillary would basically have been committing political suicide.

No chance against an incumbent president. The only chance to beat a sitting chief executive is, when he does a really poor job. Obama was and still is very popular among Democrats.
