While 3 years does seem way too long for this I believe the law was meant to curb illegal gun trade ect. Not put mothers in prison. Always good to check laws on concealed carry before you leave your home state though.

Misleading headline, there was no "self-defense" involved here. The mandatory minimum of 3 years is absurd crap, though. It should be a slap on the wrist as this obviously wasn't gun trafficking.

Another life destroyed by mandatory minimums. And not just her own life - her children's lives too.

What does the fact that she's a single mom have to do with any of this?

She broke the law and ought to be punished. But I oppose minimum sentencing laws as a general rule and this is another example of why I do.

At least a single woman living in Philadelphia might actually have a justifiable reason to use a firearm in actual self-defense, as opposed to the histrionic white male in a gated exurb community who's all "MUH PRIVATE PROPERTY!" and is the typical concealed carry license recipient.

What does the fact that she's a single mom have to do with any of this?
The fact that her kids will have to go without a mother who is the only person providing for them?

So, you think she should be locked up for a year? Six months? Either way, that's a long time for her kids to go with no mother providing for them.

Any evidence for this claim or just another one of your bigoted generalizations?

I never said I thought she should go to jail, period. But there are plenty of kids with parents in jail for "victimless crimes" like marijuana possession or unpaid tickets. Do you feel sorry for them?

Again another failure of the Supreme Court.

They should have declared minimum sentences unconstitutionnal eons ago.

This is an unfortunate, but necessary side effect of otherwise effective mandatory minimum laws. If she wants out, she should appeal for a pardon.

I have a hunch that charges will either be dropped or that Governor Christie will have a pardon ready for her as soon as the verdict is delivered.

For all the (correct) outrage at mandatory minimum sentencing, one aspect I find a bit troubling is the fact that laws between neighboring states can be so different from each other.

I'm not sure it can be expected that everyone will know that something that is perfectly legal in their state of residence will get them 3 years in prison just a few miles away. Certainly, if possible, one should inform themselves...but it still seems ridiculous.

If the person caught carrying a gun in this story fit a different demographic in several categories, they'd be a talk radio hero by now. But instead the story is being ignored.

Regardless of one's stance on guns, mandatory minimum sentences, especially for nonviolent offenses, are a horrible idea.

If you have a license to carry a deadly weapon, you need to know the rules for that license. Guns are serious business. It's not like she was caught jaywalking. If NJ wants to keep out deadly weapons, as best as they can with today's gun lusty population, it's not unreasonable for violators to face stiff penalties. She'll defianately not serve years, unlike thousands of people who have been caught crossing state lines with small bits of harmless plant matter.

As others have said, I'm pretty sure she'll be pardoned. Still, she's been in Jail for a while awaiting trial apparently.

Another reason to end mandatory minimums.
