I believe most are agreed that Sarah Palin was not the best pick by John McCain for VP in 2008, coming across as an airhead in many respects, and perceived by most as not Vice Presidential material, let alone Presidential material.

The number one rule for picking a Vice Presidential candidate is to pick someone who is capable of assuming the Presidency in the event something should happen to the President.  In my view, McCain failed this criteria miserably.

In retrospect, who should John McCain have picked for Vice President other than Sarah Palin?

Someone safe and boring, like Fred Thompson.  Thompson is solidly conservative but fairly competent.
However, McCain would still have lost the election with any running mate.

Joe Biden.  That would have been a real game changer, and would have pulled the rug from under that upstart pipsqueak Obama.

Romney arguably had more credibility in 2008, so him.

Romney would have been a disaster once the market collapsed. I think Lisa Murkowski might have been a good nominee. The conservative base is going to vote for the nominee at the end of the day, just like they did in 2012.

He needed to pick her.  She sucked, but she kept him from losing turnout in many states and helped him keep the states of GA, AZ, MT, and possibly SD.

Why Romney, specifically?

His wealth would make people much more uncomfortable than it did in 2012, and gaffes like "I'm not concerned about the very poor" and the 47% debacle could further sink McCain against a more energetic Obama.

Lieberman.

It fit his country first message and would allow him to try to define Obama as an inexperienced partisan. He'd also get attention for the first unity ticket since Lincoln.

I understand why he went for Palin (added diversity/ youth, expertise on energy issues, doubles down on mavericks, pleases the base), but the last few years have shown that she does not have the temperament for national office.
