With the 80th anniversary of the "July-Putsch" coming up on Friday and the 70th one of the Stauffenberg murder attempt of Hitler recently, I have once again read a lot about the Nazi- and Austro-Fascism time.

And yes, we have been at the Mauthausen-Gusen KZ (ca. 200.000-500.000 murdered) during high-school and at the Hartheim T4 euthanasia castle (roughly 20.000 murdered disabled people, mostly children and old people).

Both of them are located in Upper Austria, near Linz - not far away from where Hitler was born.

It's really odd and depressing feeling when you walk around in there and in the gas chambers.

What about you ?

I've been to a few, including Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Sure it's depressing, but one should have seen it.

No, and I will try to avoid them at all costs.

No, and I will try to avoid them at all costs.

For someone that's supposedly so proud to be German, one would think that would include a knowledge and awareness of all German history. And appreciation of the BRD follows especially from knowing how it came to be and what horrors it replaced.

Not that I would expect anything different from a fake patriot such as yourself that makes arrogant comments about your and your nation's superiority with nothing to back it up.

I'm sorry I don't like to do tours of such places, but this does not preclude one from having knowledge and awareness of German history or being proud to be German. What a bizarre comment.

You claimed to avoid visiting a place of immense importance in German history "at all cost". I can only conclude you are too delicate and emotionally unprepared to see such a place.

I don't think everyone needs to see a KZ, but avoiding it on principle as you apparently do (despite being one of our most outspoken "patriots"), likely means one or more of a few things, none of which would speak highly of your character.

Go pick a fight with someone else, or just put me on ignore if my comments are too irksome for you.

I visited Auschwitz/Birkenau twice. A surreal experience.

I visited Mauthausen in seventh grade... It was tough, that describes it best I'd say.

I visited Sachsenhausen when in 9th grade. Pretty chilling and then it isn't even a death camp. I have never been to Poland but once I do I think I would like to go to a camp. It seems like a part of history one ought to see.

No, but my grandfather was present at the liberation of some of them when he was in the military during World War 2.

If I ever find myself in Europe, I think I would visit a camp. I think every person should visit if they have the option.

This clearly proves that you are ignorant of history and too emotionally unprepared.*

No, actually, that wasn't a general statement. It applied to you personally based on your statements and behavior here.

Yeah, if I'm in Europe I'm going to do fun things, not make myself feel depressed because a bunch of imbeciles decided to vote NSDAP eighty years ago.

No.  I've never been to continental Europe, and even if I had, I doubt I'd include one in my itinerary.

No, we thankfully didn't have such in Canada. My region has an internment camp for the Austro-Hungarians during WWI, through, but it's was a much better place.

I don't think I could handle visiting a concentration camp.

No, but if I should happen to be in Europe I would go.  I think it's best for people to know what true evil is... it helps to not repeat it.

No, I doubt I would, especially if I was going with my fiancee. If I ever did visit Germany, the only thing I'd really be there for would be the world's largest model railroad. Germany just doesn't much catch my fancy.

If I ever visit Europe, it will be Britain, to reconnect with my ancestral roots or France, for the art, picturesque country, and yes, the food...
