It has to be the Colossus of Rhodes, I always liked the fact that it was built just to spite Demetrius Poliocetes after he failed to take the island.

The great lighthouse.  Not only is it a fantastical feat of engineering, but it was also a useful, practical structure that served more than the whims of autocrats or mysteries of religion.
