It also would set up a nice contrast against Rand Paul. Not that his plagiarism was as bad as this but still

Rand Paul's plagiarism wasn't as bad as this. It was WORSE!

I'm not sure I agree. Walsh plagiarized a major academic paper; Rand Paul just used wikipedia summaries of movies to explain them in his speeches. I don't really know much about copyright law, but I'm not even sure if copying wikipedia could be considered plagiarism at all-- it's just dumb.

He's too busy being an asshole to do the right thing for his party and run.

Reminds me of Evan Bayh 2010 (he would have been the best chance Dems had for the seat, but in retrospect I don't think he would have been able to overcome the 2010 wave).

Yeah, Bandit's just being a super-hack as always.  He's basically the left-wing krazen.  He has Andy Barr's district as lean D and Thomas Massie's as lean R.

IMO, Brian Schweitzer would be fairly easy to defeat given his extremely stupid comments about his gay-dar and others.  I think Bohlinger would be the best bet for MT Dems.

Yes, how dare Schweitzer do what's best for him and his family instead of doing what's best for the people who gleefully waged a vicious smear campaign against him after a minor gaffe Roll Eyes

So you don't think Massie will be re-elected?

Walsh doesn't sound like he's dropping out: (though I suppose it could change)

I think Massie's district is safe-R, and Barr's is toss-up at the very least(I would say lean to likely R).

Walsh seems now leaning towards staying in after leaning yesterday towards dropping out.

I'm not entirely sure him dropping out would help anything. Maybe it would narrow the race a little bit.

Nancy Keenan sure as hell won't make the race any more competitive. Bohlinger might, but he's a little up there in age. I think Schweitzer only has his eyes set on the White House.

How the replacement process works: SOS authorizes Dems to replace him, convention of less than 200 Dem apparatchiks, certify, send to SOS, print new ballots. Would be interesting to see one of the data geeks compile a 50-state list of replacement procedures for various offices.

Schweitzer should run, but he probably won't, maybe Dirk Adams or former NARAL president Nancy Keenan may run, but I think it's a sure GOP gain.

Nancy Keenan looks set to be the sacrificial lamb, per NYT.

Keenan isn't interested, so they'll reach down to the Leg.

If Schweitzer does get in, he must be getting a pretty sweet deal from the DSCC. A chairmanship of something visible perhaps?

Can't see Feinstein getting excited over the prospect of serving with Schweitzer

The prospect of losing her chairmanship is probably more imperative to Feinstein than serving with Schweitzer.

Come to think of it, Schweitzer's gaffes may be enough to convince him that he needs a legitimate venue to stay on the national stage, especially if he wants to run for President.

Wow

Wow

Now, is this more republican favored? Unless Schweitzer really wants it (very unlikely), there will be somebody else with less recognition.

Exactly, I tend to think Schweitzer bowed out originally not because he was worried about the corruption issue or because he didn't see himself as a legislator (though I don't see him as one either), but because he planned to run in 2016 and he'd basically have to start campaigning as soon as he started in the Senate. Now that he's no longer a legitimate 2016 contender (if he was in the first place), he might be more inclined to take this opportunity, especially if it gives him a platform to stay relevant and redeem himself so he could run for President in the future.

I doubt Schweitzer would run, but if he does, it would be a very competitive race even with his comments about Feinstein. However, I suspect it will be some random state legislator, in which case, congratulations Senator Daines!

Even if Schweitzer jumps in it will be lean-Daines. He's the only one who could salvage this seat though.
