America's tendency to value material possessions over people. We make space in our lives for stuff, but not for people. The absurdity of having a train room only drives the point in even stronger. Our stuff serves no real purpose. Just entertainment. A silly toy. But still more important than our children.

Yes I think it symbolizes that Papa Bushie, one of the tale's true heroes, has finally achieved some happiness. He works sixty to eighty hours a week to come home to a loveless marriage and a son that literally uses the money he earns to pay for pornography, but the train room is his escape.
