The al-Qaeda-Inspired Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has ordered all girls and women between the ages of 11 and 46 in and around Iraq's northern city of Mosul to undergo female genital mutilation, the United Nations said on Thursday.

“It is a fatwa (or religious edict) of ISIS, we learnt this this morning,” said Jacqueline Badcock, the number two U.N. official in Iraq.

The “fatwa” would potentially affect 4 million women and girls, Badcock told reporters in Geneva by videolink from Arbil.

The US should definitely not intervene though, because imperialism and also Obama is bad.

Yes USA should not intervene, not because of Obama or imperialism are bad, but because it would just place USA in one more decade long clusterf**k, where the people they try to liberate hate them and want them gone.

This is of course sad, but let get a few facts, 90% of all Egyptian women have been victims of this, do people suggest that USA should invade Egypt to stop it (and how would they practical stop the practice after the occupation of Egypt).

Also the locals of Mosul welcomed Isil, and they one who didn't have either fleed or been killed. Of course this kind of behaviour may result in Isil stop being welcomed, but as Isil are a rather small force, the likely result of them pissing off the local tribes as they did in south western Iraqi (a Sunni area), will likely have the same result, they will be driven out (in fact even today the Sunni tribes in that area prefer the central government to Isil and Isil have failed to conquer that territory).

While this is awful, it also isn't worth the actual lives of American soldiers. ISIS is a result of our first invasion. Ever heard the story of the old lady who swallowed a fly? That is going to happen if we intervene again.

Intervention doesn't always mean ground forces.

Citation?

ick, I hate reading about this topic.  In Egypt it's between 78%-97% depending on how one defines things.  This is despite it being flat illegal since 2007 and mostly illegal since the 90s.

Forgive my ignorance, but how can something like this be 'mostly' illegal? Enforcement issues or something else?

Possibly it was originally made illegal for Muslims in Egypt, but I believe the Copts too generally practice it there.

I suppose there was exceptions and loopholes.

Looks like this is another ISIS story that may also be untrue.

Not a big surprise, the practice are not native to Iraq, so it would seem weird if they had adopted it.

Oddly enough, most of us are happier to believe the worst of ISIS until proven otherwise.

In a decentralised outfit like ISIS, operating in a war zone, how likely is it the bloke i/c female genital mutilation (Iraq-West division) is going to have got the message "No more press releases under the ISIS name now, OK?" and treated it as top priority? This isn't Starbucks deciding on a re-branding and telling the subsidiaries.

Actually, it is native to Iraq, but primarily among the Kurdish population rather than the Sunni Arab population.  Also it thankfully has historically been the least severe forms of FGM that the Kurds have had.
