Original
emoviolence cover

I much the version by the very influential emoviolence band Orchid. I'd also be interested in hearing emoviolence covers of Immigrant Song and Stairway to Heaven.

The cover was decent until 0:14.

Having actually wasted a minute and half of my life listening to this:

Oh, god, emoviolence is even worse than I imagined it would be.

The original, but I didn't mind the cover.

For the record "Whole Lotta Love" is one of the worst songs Led Zeppelin ever recorded, and I'm a fan of them generally.  I guess I probably ought to like that they were experimenting with the weirdness of theremin, but it doesn't really mesh with the riff-heavy nature of the rest of the song, and said rest of the song is just a little too inane and dumb (not that a little bit of inanity is a bad thing in the context of Led Zeppelin, but they way overdo it here).

Emoviolence is a pretty extreme example of "acquired taste", I didn't like it at all the first time I heard it either. This kind of makes sense considering it's an offshoot of an offshoot of an offshoot and often makes use of techniques that would simply be considered objectively bad in most mainstream musical genres, such as intentionally playing out of tune or using more distorted recording.

But Orchid is probably one of the most accessible bands of the genre. On the other end of the spectrum you have this.

The main problem is the death-metal-esque vocals, of course.

If that is 'accessible'? Then yeah, there will be no meeting of minds on this and I can find redeeming features in most genres.

When I say Orchid are accessible I mean that fans of things like metalcore and hardcore often also like them, if you're completely out of the scene and all you won't find it accessible at all. That said, a cover isn't the best example of them, something like this would be. But emoviolence isn't a defined genre, it's really just an umbrella term for any type of hardcore that's screamy and includes lots of (real) emo influence. Something like this could be included, and that's certainly more accessible than Orchid.

The main problem is the death-metal-esque vocals, of course.

LOL. Saying that would probably piss off actual metalheads far more than me. The only screaming in death metal vocals is backing vocals, anything with screaming lead vocals is almost certainly not real metal (metalcore doesn't count) in fact.

If this song is presented as a good, or even average quality, example of the genre, I'm cofortable doing so, thank you.

As stated above it's a quite diverse genre. And a single track that happens to be a cover which was also recorded in a basement and appeared only a band's demo tape is the never the best example. Compare to these:

Did you know that, like a lot of Zep songs, Whole Lotta Love is a rip off an older blues number by Muddy Waters (written by Willie Dixon)?  The original M. Waters number and the "inbetween" song by the Small Faces You Need Loving.

Zep's version is the best of all of them, of course.

The best version of Whole Lotta Love is from Dread Zeppelin's debut album, Un-Led-ed, circa 1990.  No doubt about it.

Well, that's about 15 minutes of my life I'll never get back. Tongue

The musicality actually isn't bad, but the constant guttural throat singing isn't "diverse" or "an interesting contrast" so much as "annoying as hell". The persistent disconnect from the rest of the song (with some variation on Portrait's piece), was grating.

Time and place for throat being torn out singing. I can't imagine full 40 minutes album of that.

Dread Zeppelin was awesome.  Elvis impersonator doing Zeppelin songs to a reggae beat.  Genius.  Brick House (of the Holy) and Black Dog were my favorites.
