Option 1 is for an inhabitant of Crete, and I don't consider all of them to be awful, so option 2.

Option 2 makes far more sense for a European.

Option 1, obviously.

Option 1 is for an inhabitant of Crete, and I don't consider all of them to be awful, so option 2.

Wouldn't that be more like 'cree-shun'? I've never actually said that word aloud, so I could be totally wrong on that.

Maybe not, since I thought it was spelled "Cretean" and not "Cretan".

This, so option 2 is probably the most accurate but they're all wrong.

Option 2 makes far more sense for a European.

...or anyone speaking correct English.

Actually, more this, but it's basically the same.

You mean with a nasalized "i"? I thought nobody was able to pronounce nasals besides the French. Tongue

I'm not 100% clear on what the poll options are getting at, but I pronounce it to rhyme with "threaten" or "Tibetan" (and thus not with "Cretan"). I was unaware that there was a different pronunciation before seeing this thread.

I'm with ilikeverin, considering that most of my pronunciation stems from my Midwestern family and a dozen years growing up in MN. So I voted other, since the t isn't really pronounced except as a stop between syllables. However, if asked to think about saying it alone for someone, I'd be prone to put the t in.

Both ways are clearly proper.
