Given his support for the civil rights both as a member of Congress and later as VP and as President, do you think that if he were around today that LBJ would support gay rights?

He would do the same as Obama. Hide until the issue became too big to ignore.

Of course he'd support it today.

What is your reasoning for LBJ being on board for gay rights? An issue like this would make his egotistical head explode with rage. Irony is you had Midwestern conservatives (like me), Northeastern libs and others for civil rights against the southern one-party democrat/Dixiecrat racists.

Of course he wouldn't support it personally. But in today's political climate he simply cannot get away with being overtly anti-SSM. It's most likely that he would stay quiet on the issue and try not to show any position on it either way.

He would probably support civil unions and ENDA but not gay marriage.

He supported the Civil Rights Act yet was still pretty racist, so I imagine he would likewise today support gay marriage for political purposes while using bad homophobic language in his private conversations.

It's 2014. McCaskill, Donnely., Hagan, and Heitkamp support gay marriage, and so would he.

As for civil rights, northern Democrats were more likely to vote for it than northern Republicans, and southern Democrats were more likely than southern Republicans.

No, he won't support gay marriage.

He was still a segregationist, who didn't believe in "forced integration".

Um, most Republicans, conservative or liberal, did support civil rights measures up until 1964.  After that, the GOP became more hostile to civil rights measures and the Dems became more pro-civil rights after that.  That being said, those midwestern conservatives were by definition, liberal, on that issue.
