So I learned that supposedly Belgians hate it, consider it the Belgian version of Budweiser, and the only people who drink it in Belgium are American tourists. I found that kind of funny since their marketing is so much different from Budweiser. However I can't disagree with the assessment. I didn't find it much different than pisswater mainstream American beer.

It is Belgium's Budweiser. Not worth drinking given the alternatives.

It's a hobo in a new suit.

That is to say, it's tolerably drinkable.

Drink hobos responsibly.

It's considerably better than American Budweiser. And it's usually about the same price. So freedom beer obviously.

But it's still the Belgian Budweiser....given the available alternatives among Belgian beers.

That said, given the outstanding American microbrews out there....the existence of American Budweiser is similarly difficult to fathom.

I don't mind it. I prefer it to many of the 'normal' alternatives (like Heineken)

BUT considering the alternatives available at any Belgian Bar - it's not very good.

I share what other people say about the marketing.

The marketing always - and this is the best bit - likes to imply that it is French, which is hilarious.

Speaking of good marketing of booze, I remember when drinking Jameson was rare. Not sure how it happened but it really took off.

As for Stella it was okay. First had it in England about 15 years ago. That, Carlsberg and red bull vodkas made for some rough mornings.

America is full of people with poor taste and lots of money.

They're definitely sh**ttier Belgian beers than Stella, but I think the only way they can be acquired is through vending machines at hostels and dorms.

Isn't the point of being Belgian to rotate your ethnicity between Dutch, French, and German whenever it's hip and convenient?

Stella may be the Belgian Bud, but I find it has more flavor even if the bodies are similar. There are times when a light lager is fine, and Stella can fill that. However, in honor of Tour de France champion Vincenzo Nibali I went with Peroni tonight.

It's obviously a pretty bad example of the rich and varied Belgian brewing tradition, given that it's a pale pilsner and all.

But there's nothing inherently wrong with being a pale pilsner, and it's better than average for its style.  As long as you get it on tap rather than in a bottle, of course, given the skunk-prone green bottles.

And, yes, what everyone else has said about the marketing.

It is tolerable, but I generally prefer something darker (not to mention more sour if we are talking strictly belgian)

It's a decent beer, despite it being the Belgian version of Fosters.
