Did you at least call ahead and let them know you were running late?

If only we had the technology to view traffic data in real time, from our desks to the palms of our hands.

If he already got stuck in the traffic, he may not have been able to avoid it. Going to Lansing one time this happened to me, and it took me over an hour to get to the next exit. It's not good to be late the first week, but this one doesn't seem like something to criticize him about.

Moral of the story is don't live 13 miles from your job.

Some cities you have no choice.  In Tulsa, most of the really good jobs are in Downtown Tulsa on the NW side of town.  I live on the far east side.  I found this apartment long before I found this job.  When I found this apartment I was 2 miles from my first Tulsa employer.  The second one, I was 3 miles.  I knew I had to travel a bit to get to the good jobs.  And, really, 13 miles is not a long way.  My Dad lives 18 miles from work and I lived 35 miles from work before when I worked at Sprint in OKC.  It doesn't matter where you live.  You have to adjust to wherever you live and work.  Nagas is right, I should have left 15 minutes early, at least.  I still beat my supervisor there and I did call the owner of the company from the car letting him know I was stuck in traffic.

My supervisor today came to me and asked me to make my work shift in half hour increments.  What that means is instead of going in at 7:40, taking a 20-25 minute lunch and getting off at 4:05 or 4:10, he wants me to start at either 7:30 or 8:00 (my choice) and take either a half hour or hour lunch, thus getting off at 16:00, 16:30, or 17:00 depending on what time I go in.  I don't have to do the same shift everyday.  So, what I'm going to do is aim for the 7:30 start time with the half hour lunch and if I'm running late for whatever reason like this morning, I can start at 8:00.  Worst case scenario I can work an 8:30-17:00 shift if I'm running really late.  When I get more comfortable with what I'm doing, I could add in a 7:00-15:30 shift option.  Right now, though, my supervisor doesn't want me to come in too much before he does.  He normally gets in between 8:00 and 8:30.  The owner opens up the office at either 6:45 or 7:00 and there are a few employees who work 7:00-16:00.  This wasn't meant to get onto me, but just to make his records easier to keep track.

A city of 400,000 people has no business being 200 square miles in size.

The city of Tulsa and really Tulsa County as a whole is a lot more compact in size than the 610,000 population Oklahoma City.  Oklahoma City and Oklahoma County is a lot more spread out.  I always lived on the east side of Oklahoma County and it would take me 20-30 minutes just to get to Downtown Oklahoma City which is just the middle of the city.  It would take 30-45 minutes to get to far NW Oklahoma City depending on traffic and which route you took.  In Tulsa, I drive for 20-25 minutes and I'm already on the complete other side of town.  I drive for 30 minutes and I've gone from the SE suburb of Broken Arrow to the WNW suburb of Sand Springs.  The thing is Tulsa has a lot of freeway.  We only have two interstates (I-44 and I-244), but we have a handful of other freeways (St Hwy 51, US Hwy 169, Creek Turnpike, St Hwy 11 up by the Tulsa Airport.  I take I-44 to get to my parents and St Hwy 51 to get to work.

Quite a traumatic experience for you no doubt. Did he say anything about the military time?

I always verbally speak to others with civilian time.  I just like to write and personally use military time.

Do they not automatically round up/down for purposes of doing payroll?

If I were to work, say, 44 hours and 25 minutes in a given week, I'd get paid for 44.5 hours. If I worked 44 hours and 5 minutes, I'd get paid for 44 hours. Does he seriously expect you to be exactly on the half hour mark when you're clocking in and out?

My job records time worked down to the second. And then pays down to the hundredth of an hour. That rounding would suck. I don't get paid anything for staying 7 minutes late?

Those who are getting on Jeff for being late should, with all due respect, back off. Traffic is sometimes unpredictable in any major metropolitan area. I don't fault him for being a few minutes late. If it's a habit, it's worrisome. If it's a one-time or occasional occurrence, then he's a victim of an occasional and unavoidable traffic pattern variation.

It's been a nice evening tonight.  I will be going to bed within the next few minutes.  I am going to try to leave here around 7:00 so I can get there and start work at 7:30.  This puts the weekend starting in 18 hours from now!

Jeff, congratulations on getting off to a great start this week. This is the right job for you and it's a challenge for anyone to shift into full-time work mode from job search. You should be proud.

Good Friday Evening!  The weekend has arrived, which means Week 1 is officially in the books.  Today was another really good day putting closure on a great week to start my new career.  My supervisor is pleased with my progress.  There are definitely things I need to improve on, but I've made a lot of progress since 11:30 Monday morning when I started drawing.  What I have done the last three days is making revisions on drawings that had already been done up.  Several of the drawings took me a long time to fix as I had to go back and correct my mistakes, but I eventually got those fixed how my supervisor wants them.  My main project today went a lot faster.  It only took about 5-6 hours instead 10-12 working hours.  My supervisor and I spent the last hour today trying to get my computer hooked up to a printer so I can print out bigger sheets of the drawings so they'll be easier to see.  I am looking forward to relaxing this weekend and then getting back to the grind for Week 2 starting in 63 hours!
