And of course the suggestion of Bushie practicing CAD after work was quickly brushed aside.

I may do a little bit tonight, but mostly I am confident of my abilities, I just need to go all in on the focus part of it.

What the heck does "go all in on focus" mean? Was he not focused at work before?

Alright - the issue isn't whether you are confident of your abilities, we have proof that you're a terrible judge of that. What matters is your boss's thoughts, he's clearly not happy. Don't pretend that because you had a good day that you're currently safe, you're not. It takes weeks of good days.

You're in no position to feel comfortable or that you can coast. Cut back the TV and the church and practice, practice, practice. Yes, you're going to give up leisure time to make yourself more valued in your job.

Fortunately, Bushie's willingness to cut back and/or miss out on things seems to include church, as he's updated us many a time about Grade 7s and whatnot spoiling his plans for evening corporate worship.

TV on the other hand...

Bushie's problem (well, one of them) is that he thinks work starts and finish and doesn't follow you home. Now, that's not ideal - far from it, but it is reality.

For example, I'm home unwell, probably with the flu/a virus. I was yesterday as well, but I did still checked emails and dealt with stuff happening in the office.

You need to shape up, having more 'focus' isn't going to do it - giving over your leisure time in the short term will help you in the long-term.

But as we know with his childish attitude to food and drink, I don't know if he can cope with that discomfort.

Work starting and finishing without following you home is certainly an ideal of a civilized society, but is unfortunately not the reality of the things.

Bushie, it's admirable that you are trying to make your time YOUR time, but it would be best to bust out the AutoCAD and review some of that material.

I just fear the worst here. I'm sure there is more to the story, like what, specifically, his boss is upset about. I doubt it's just "focus" and I'm sure he was given specific things he needs to improve on. Only he knows what he was told.

Once you are hired after college or whatever program you take, employers do not care what your grades were. They want to know whether you can accomplish the tasks that you are given. If you are falling behind, you really need to practice on your own time. You won't get paid for it but if you want to keep your job you must have the skills necessary.

Okay, enjoy getting fired. They're a small operation so cops will have to be called instead of security escorting you out.

Bushie, what was your weakness? You continue to say you're confident in your abilities... did your boss say you didn't seem focused? Or that you had a poor work ethic/attitude? I don't understand how you can believe your abilities are fine when you just had a poor performance report yesterday.

I hate to say it but I'm guessing that his drawings just aren't that good. They're probably filled with mistakes.

I'd guess the same, considering he had issues with that in school the entire time and never did anything to practice/improve his skill.

You all are really overreacting.  Its possible I could be underreacting, but you all are blowing this out of proportion.  Yes, I had a poor review yesterday and my weakness was not giving my all into the drawings while at work and watching the clock.  Yes, I have a tendency to watch the clock, but that's hereditary.  My grandmother is a clock-watcher, my mother is a clock-watcher, and I am a clock-watcher.  My dad and his parents don't know what a clock looks like.  They're totally opposite.  Because I have been watching the clock too much, I have been hurrying and paying slightly less attention to my detail and my drawings.  That was his biggest beef with me was the clock watching.  I definitely need to work on that.  I think I did a better job of it today.  He has moved me on to something completely new, that I had never seen before in the 5 1/2 weeks I have worked there.  I did three drawings today and I got the first one exactly correct on the first go around.  The second one needed only a couple minor corrections.  The last one also only needed a couple minor corrections that I will finish up in the morning.  I will work on the fourth drawing in this set in the morning, as well.  He was actually surprised that I picked up on things and actually correctly pointed out a couple of his errors.  Even he makes mistakes and he's been doing this for 30+ years and I was able to point out a couple of his errors.  Of course, I was very professional when I asked him about them, but he was pleased with that.  Also, the questions I asked today about my own work were not elementary questions.  They were intermediate-level questions that I would only have known if he showed me.  He didn't show me until I asked the question, but he wanted to see if I could figure out what questions to ask.  He gladly showed me what to do when I asked those questions and the explanations did not take long as I picked up on them really quick.  I correctly implemented his answers into my drawings within a short period of time.  One set of his answers he gave to me right at the close of the day, so I pondered them for a few minutes before time to leave and will resume in the morning.  I wrote down my tasks for the first hour or so in the morning so I can keep myself busy until he gets there.  I have also started making a checklist of the errors that my dad recommended last week when I had the bad day on Thursday.  That has helped and I think it will greatly reduce the errors I am making.

I know there is more I could be doing, but I feel good about the day I put in today.  I will work a full 9 hours tomorrow, so I'll get a little extra time to make some progress.  The thing is, if I do everything I can to the best of my ability and still get let go, then I can go out with my head high.  The thing I am not going to do is lay down and give up.  I am also not going to doubt myself, because that could be detrimental, as well.

Clock-watching is NOT hereditary. It's being lazy and wanting to the minimum required before you can go home.

If you have something to do... you work at it until it is correct, near-enough is not good-enough for your line of work. Even your first posts were about your timetable to ensure you could get out early?!

You keep going until it is perfect, even if that means working until 6, 7, 8pm... that shows commitment. Fixating on the clock as to when you can leave doesn't show enthusiasm for a job, it shows enthusiasm for a pay-cheque. No wonder he's irritated at you.

My problem in school was calendar-watching, much like my clock-watching problem of today.  I was so concerned about getting finished and getting into the job market that I sacrificed a bit of my quality.  I still wish I had stayed for the Civil CAD, but I was too eager to get into the job market.  However, at least I have a CAD job now and I know I have time to make the necessary adjustments because he has not let me go, yet.  As long as I have a job, I have time.

It's not hereditary to the point that I can't blame it on that, and I am not blaming it on anyone, but myself.  Still, though, it is a problem, but I did pretty well today.  I can be pleased with a hard days work today.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by clock watching?  Do you sit at a desk and stare at a clock all day instead of working. My chemistry teacher had a sign on his clock that said "Time will pass. Will you?" I'm sure he thought he was very clever.

I sat and looked at my watch constantly.  I did my work, but I would constantly look down at my watch every 2-3 minutes.

What did hereditary clock watches do before the invention of the clock?
