I'm kind of surprised that the Pope is winning by such a massive landslide. I must be missing something, because I don't really get why he's so popular on this forum...
The Pope's politics--or the way he communicates the Magisterium's traditional politics--deviate from left-right orthodoxy in a way that gives him a lot of crossover appeal. He's perceived to be doing a good job so far cleaning up the Church and restoring its credibility and most leftists and old-school conservatives alike have reasons to approve of and like him. Cuomo's politics deviate from left-right orthodoxy, too, but in a way that just comes across as crass, tight-fisted, small-hearted, and self-absorbed. The only people who have any real reason to prefer Cuomo are hardcore market liberals and people who are single-issue about gay marriage and/or abortion. It's not that these are inherently invalid political positions to have, but I guess we turn out to have pretty few of them on this forum, in the latter case fewer even than I would have thought.
