I know I'll disagree with many comrades on this, but my personal answer to this is yes. Although it looks like China has adopted the most savage form of capitalism, their leaders are perfectly aware that it is a necessary step they've got to take in order to achieve a communist society. After all, their economic and tecnological progress remains unmatched. They're thinking of the future.

What do you think?

Obviously not.
In Hong Kong, the pro-Beijing parties are more right-wing than the anti-Beijing parties.

The leaders of China have sold their soul to the almighty Yuan ever since they figured out that being wealthy brings certain... advantages. According to the current Fortune Global 500 list, China is now home to the third- and fourth-largest corporations in the world.

And to quote the Wikipedia entry on President Xi Jinping:

Come on, at least I don't defend the PRC.

Beijing's leaders are obviously only interested in lining their own pockets (as evidenced by their brutal crushing of an actual leftist revolt in 1989).

This isn't a matter of opinion, it's a matter of fact. No, China is not Communist, it never was.

Its not "capitalist" though, either. China is more like what it always was except no emperor or eunuchs. The traditional Confucian Bureaucracy rules China.

No, but as noted by AngryWeasel, it is not a free market society either.

Like I said, all of that it is an evolved republican (not the party) form of its ancient self.

1) It's no longer communist, and probably hasn't been since the late 80ies/early 90ies
2) China will one day turn into a democracy, but we're probably decades away from that still (perhaps around 2040 if we're lucky)

I remember my academic adviser saying during class that political scientists were looking to re-classify China as "Vanguard Capitalism" given its one party structure combined with its increasingly corporatist nature or something like that.

It depends on whether you accept the Chinese Communist Party's definition of communism. According to them, they are in the "primary stage of socialism", the closest analogy would be Lenin's New Economic Policy (NEP). Note that when most of us think of communism we think of Marxism and Leninism, but the Chinese have also added "Socialism with Chinese characteristics", "the Three Represents",  the "Scientific Development Outlook" and the "Chinese Dream". According to them, judging how they measure up to communism by Marxism-Leninism is like judging whether a man is pious by reading only the first 1/3 of the Bible, while neglecting the next 2/3.

Ya, Beet. If one takes the CPC at their word they are still communists and are merely laying the proper groundwork in advance for that transformation as best they know how. My earlier post pretty much is assuming that their country is an oligarchy now and that party ideology takes a back seat to the more contemporary, Dengist priority of optimizing economic performance with state-firm collaboration.
