Someone's gonna have to sell me on this, because as it stands right now, I'm not going to vote in favor of the bill, especially since, it took the building of a new stadium to keep the Penguins hockey team in Pittsburgh and keep them from migrating to Kansas City.

Thank you Mr. Speaker.

This bill is meant to solve a problem that, sadly, is not always taken with its respective importance: government subsidizing people or corporations for things they can do for themselves. Why should the Northeast government subsidize stadiums to fill someone else's pocket at the expense of the taxpayer and making social programs more difficult to make? I'm not saying "let's not build new stadiums", like Mr. Lieutenant Governor seems to fear, but let's make them property of the Northeast government and its people. And let's put our past mistakes on this issue in order.

BTW, amendment is friendly.

My fear was that at the time it was done, the Penguins ownership group simply could not afford to build Consol Energy Center and the Civic/Mellon Arena was not in the most spritely state. The city of Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania subsidized much of the cost. I would like there to be a way in which we can prevent teams from leaving cities over stadium disputes. If the city and state hadn't covered the cost, they'd be the Kansas City Penguins right now and just typing that gives me heartburn. We need some sort of addition to prevent team relocation over this issue.

Ok, I kinda feel you, but is it really worth making our taxpayers pay for it?

I didn't mind paying to keep the Penguins in Pittsburgh. Tongue

However, I'd vote for this if it's in tandem to make it harder for teams to relocate over this issue.

YOU wouldn't mind. What about the taxpayer that is some other team's fan? Should we force him to have his precious money used on this?

Good we can reach an agreement Smiley

They should leave Pittsburgh Tongue

Seriously though,  I support this bill. If I want my money to go towards funding a stadium, I'll buy a ticket to a game. Stadiums shouldn't be tax subsidized.

This was an issue that I wanted to address during my tenure as Governor awhile back.

I'll need to think about the specifics when I'm a bit more lucid, but I support ending the status-quo wrt sports issues such as these.

Sports economist J.C. Bradbury on why the economic payout from stadium subsidies is less than expected.

Also, to shed some light on why sports owners ought to pay for their own sh!tty teams:

Ostensibly, one might look at a stadium and see commercial activity. However, what commercial activity is to be had from $8 beers?

I question the wisdom of buying a stadium just to sell it again although there might be something obvious I'm missing here.

Would expropriation of sports stadiums be constitutional though?

Now that's a VERY good question. If not, I could erase my last amendment.

Unfortunately, I don't think a Judge is allowed to dispense legal advice outside of the courtroom (i.e. in court cases).

We'd be better off asking for advice from a legal authority such as a former Justice or Judge.

Averroes then?

It's curious because it would mean it's unconstitutional to take property of something you paid for.

Quite so. I could not, in good faith, give any form of legal advice on pending legislation. As a matter of explanation, however, I consider my role as administrator of elections seperate from my work as a judge, and will, on certain ocassions, provide commentary to the Assembly on specific electoral matters.

The voting period is now over. By a vote of 4-0-1,  this bill goes to the governor for his signature or veto.
