It will, ostensibly over some nonsense in the Baltics or the South China sea but really over competition between American and Russian/Chinese gas firms coinciding with the decline of Middle Eastern oil. Think of the USA as Britain circa 1914, and China as Imperial Germany.

The American and Chinese economies are too entangled for this to make sense to either party right now.

So were the Germans and the English.

Oversimplification, but their economies were generally competing for markets. Now with the development of international finance and multinational corporations, the national interests have  blurred.  Right now business on both sides are content with the arrangements and these interests always have a powerful say in our foreign policy.

I've always thought this was a revelatory accurate comparison. The USA is the global naval power that is also the "status quo" power and China is like Imperial Germany, a rising newcomer power who wants a global sphere for itself.

Except now, we have WWI and WWII as lessons in the cost of modern war (and those without nuclear weapons). Even though the British "defeated" Germany, strategically it itself was defeated as the war exhausted the economy of the empire permanently. Britain was ironically replaced by the United States and failed to defend its status as the status quo power. At the time, many people were looking to a short, sharp war similar to the Franco-Prussian war which accounted for a great deal of the enthusiasm. No one was expecting 80+ million deaths, 100+ million if the "Spanish flu" is counted, going over 150+ million if the other secondary effects, such as the rise of communism in war-torn countries, is counted. Today the stakes are higher so the reasons for avoiding war much greater.

The same was true of the U.S. and the Soviet Union, yet we somehow managed to go 40 years without a world war.

Indeed, circumstances have changed a little from back then. Funny how some prefer to eschew historical context.

I wasn't saying war is inevitable, I was just saying the geo-political situation is rather similar.

Wouldn't it in fact be World War V, since the neo-cons claim that the Cold War has been World War III and the War on Terror has been World War IV?? Tongue

The WWIII can happen if the countries don't use the nuke, but I doubt that everyone could avoid the temptation if everything got serious - a nuke bomb can finish a war within an hour.
At the same time, using such bomb is risky: while the rocket is flying, the other side can send its rocket. And everybody would die.
So, in general, WWIII won't happen. Because no one is crazy enough to put the whole humanity at risk. Unless someone that crazy appears and gets an access to the nuke.

Nah, you need a massive nuclear attack to destroy the enemy forces and/or their main cities and infrastructure. Noone would give up after one bomb.

I am not sure it will deserve being called a World War. Russia will not get many allies. But a bloody European war - yes, very soon.
