I was sad to hear this. While I disagreed with his views on gun control in general, the Brady Bill was a reasonable reform and I always admired his ardent lobbying on behalf of a cause that nobody can blame him for taking up.

Agree with him or not, he fought for a cause he thought was right and he spent his life doing it.  That's something everyone can and should respect.  RIP

RIP, to someone who experienced the effects of what he was fighting against, which is more than we can say about many of today's "crusaders".

I've always had tremendous respect for people like Brady who are able to take their tragedies and make something of it.  The human will is truly a powerful thing.

Huh. Will Hinckley get extra punishment now?

If you attack who fall in coma and dies a few months later, you will be charged for killing him. That's the same thing here, except than it's 33 years later.

Perhaps a limit should be put somewhere, but when and under which rationale? Would families consider that as miscarriage of justice?

Many jurisdictions have a 'year and a day rule' for things like this. I don't know if Virginia is one of them.

I definitely can sympathize with the Brady family, but I think it's a stretch to compare somebody put into a permanent coma and someone who survived and went on to be a vocal political activist. Brady survived. He lived for 33 years. A charge of attempted murder is generally more in line with what happened.

Regardless, the law is the law. If keeping Hinckley (who lives with his mother part time and is far from on permanent lockdown IIRC) in the hospital or in prison is justice in the eyes of a jury, than may justice be done. I hope this case inspires legislatures across the country to review these laws.

Considering that there is no statute of limitations on murder and that Brady's injuries sustained from the shooting have been determined to have caused his death, a murder charge is fair.

Honestly though, Hinckley was pretty clearly mentally disturbed, not responsible for his actions, etc.

Was Hinckley ever charged over Brady's shooting in 1981?

It's not. Brady lived. He survived for 33 years. A murder means your life was cut short. Brady's life may have been hampered by the wounds he suffered, but at the end of the day the man survived the attack.

Doctors seem to imply he died because he was shot. So, if he had not been shot, he would have lived more time. Perhaps 43 years instead of 33.
