Ugh, why haven't candidates learned from 2010 where so many Democrats tried to run as far away from Obama as possible and still got crushed...

This is the first cycle in a while that I think Dem recruitment has actually been worse than GOP recruitment.

The sad part is, she was regarded as the Democrats' best hope of holding the seat. She's unbelievably incompetent, stupid, and spineless. No smarts, no convictions

I'm trying to imagine a Republican Senate candidate in 2006 declaring they don't support most of Bush's policies and it just doesn't work.

Why is Democratic intraparty discipline so godawful.

The closest is Lincoln Chafee, and he didn't openly say it like Tennant did.

The only reason I want Tennant to win is to pad a vulnerable Democratic Senate majority. Otherwise she's probably just as a thousand times more useless than Zell Miller.

Wow Tennant.

You're an idiot.

You are a Democrat.  Let me spell that:  D-E-M-O-C-R-A-T.

It's perfectly acceptable to break from party policy in some areas(obviously coal, given that it's WV), but you still have to support the basic planks.  Every Democrat in the Senate voted for Reid, the ACA, and the stimulus.  That's basically the minimum for a Senate Democrat.

Um, Zel Miller got a 96 from the ACU in 2004, IIRC.

There's no way Tennant will be that conservative if elected.

Joe Manchin would beg to differ. He was going to lose, ran away from Obama, then won.

Coincidentally (not), Tennant is running in the same state.

She could be setting herself up for pulling an Evan Jenkins and running as a Republican for something down the road; this is a state which is moving extremely rapidly to the Republicans and where their bench is absolutely terrible (note that they nominated, for two congressional seats that Romney won overwhelmingly, the former chairman of the Maryland GOP and a Democratic state Senator). Tennant could switch parties and run for Governor or the other Senate seat later this decade.

Well, if Manchin does run for Governor (as rumored), then I expect Tennant to get appointed to his seat. So she could very well be a Senator some day.

In fairness to her, is running away from Obama a bad idea in a state where Obama had a 25% approval rating?

Bush made some pretty bad mistakes, if anything, it was Republican candidates not distancing enough themselves from Bush that caused them to lose. It's not like it made all the difference, but supporting Bush didn't help at all.

I disagree. Mooney wasn't a candidate of last resort. The Tea Party Establishment came down hard for him in the state. He was incredibly well-funded given DC connections. The other candidates in the primary were good. Former State Senator Steve Harrison would be very formidable if he received some money. Charlotte Lane would have carried the seat by large margins.

In the 1st, we have a growing class of legislators and a lot of the business types. McKinley, for example, came out of nowhere but is very strong electorally. We could very well grow a strong bench up north.

The 2nd District's bench is good and getting stronger. The panhandle is home to a handful of state legislators that would make great candidates at the state level. Senators Carmichael, Blair, Raines, and McCusky all come to mind. They're well-connected and savvy.

In the 3rd district, we only ran Jenkins after very strong candidates like Senator Bill Cole passed on the seat. Cole would have trounced Rahall and raised tons of cash, more than Jenkins. There is also Senator Sobonya who will play a major role in turning Cabell County Republican.

Keith Judd won delegates there, she'd have more success saying she voted for Judd than Obama in WV.

Seriously though, Manchin did this and won, and I don't have any issue with it, a lot of Obama's policies are garbage. All that said, I wouldn't vote for Reid and I would have held out for single payer, so I guess I'd be an awful senate Democrat

Well, she wants to win.

And she can't win with Obama in the White House, because WVians hate Obama.

There's at least some hope that if her strategy somehow works out and she wins, she might calm down a bit and switch back to more liberal positions in the Senate.
