Remember that Bashar Assad himself is something of a Middle Eastern version of Hitler (...)

It doesn't matter who is Assad, ideologically speaking. Many people suspect that sooner or later, the international coalition will resort to him, since no Western country is ready to send troops on the ground and Kurd fighters won't be enough to contain ISIS, even with airstrikes. Paradoxically enough, some of the ISIS financial resources may come from member countries of the coalition built to fight ISIS. We live in a strange world.

He's Hitler ideologically, not strategically. Apart from trying to make Lebanon into a client state, he's not an irredentist and has not demonstrated any inclination toward expanding his country's territory. He hasn't even attempted to seize the Golan Heights back from Israel.

Dear God, no.  Assad is a bloodthirsty dictator, but such a comparison is as absurd as calling ISIS "Islamofascist". I stated my opinion before; the misuse of certain words should be banned from Earth.

It's the fifth war involving Iraq in my lifetime (Iran-Iraq, Gulf War, Operation Desert Fox, Iraq 2003 and this one).

LOL at the idea that both Assad and ISIS are Hitler. Why is Hitler fighting with himself?

Assad is an economically conservative Hitler and ISIS is a socially conservative Hitler.

Ideologically Assad would be most comparable to someone like Ion Antonescu.

If you're thinking of including Egypt in your vacation plans, I urge you to reconsider.  Tongue

Believe it or not, there are still some tour groups out there (TopDeck included, apparently) that still think Egypt is safe enough for tourists.

Egypt militants may be copying Islamic State's brutal methods

I understand the worry about using your war toys in war, but it always sounds so silly.  Especially since it almost always come from politicians.  "we spent a lot of money on those, if we use them, they might break."  It's like the assholes that buy a Ferrari just to park it in their garage for a decade.

So, Turkey has now allowed its army to enter Syria and Iraq if necessary. Do you think it's going to happen?

Turkey has no friends in the Syrian conflict: ISIL, Assad and the Kurds - they are all Turkish foes, and any of them could it the country badly. There is no doubt than the Turks do not want to be involved, but unfortunately for them, it seems like they cannot avoid trouble indefinitely, and they are walking on an extremely thin line...

They have also allowed for foreign allied forces to be stationed in Turkey and use Turkish military facilities, which is more likely to happen IMO.

Did they make any distinction between ground forces and air forces?

If they are talking about air forces, it looks like the US air force is doing the job without that, but that may come handy for others like UK or France who so far do not have enough air forces in the area to go beyond symbolic action.

If they are talking about ground forces, and Turkey seems keen on the idea since they are talking for example of creating a buffer zone inside Syrian territory along the border, I don't think anyone else will send troops, they may have to do it themselves. Except in case of a UN mandate?

Turkey actually gets along alright with the Iraqi Kurdish government, in large part because the kurds sell them oil.

I suppose we can change the title. Canada will go (if all goes well).

Canada will send 600 soldiers and 6 planes. Sure, it still has to pass Parliament (debate and vote is scheduled for Monday) and they would be ready to act in Iraq in three weeks.

All opposition parties are against, but Conservatives have a majority.
