This reminds me of the 2012 GOP primary. The Bain ads against Romney were working, but Gingrich got so much pushback from the GOP for punching his glass jaw that he eventually backed off.

The Republicans were certainly fine with attacking Kerry for marrying rich. And then 4 years later they nominated McCain, who had married rich.
