Israel doesn't have a civil marriage statute. It only recognizes religious marriages, and for Jews this means by Orthodox standards. In other words Jews and non-Jews can not be married in Israel. Not even that, but the Orthodox standards of who is a Jew are quite restrictive and would exclude many people thought of as Jewish in the US. The only way for Jews and non-Jews to be married in Israel is to get married in another country under a loophole that Israel recognizes all international marriages, meaning Cyprus is a relatively popular destination for Israeli weddings.

For all the criticism of places that haven't introduced gay marriage yet, Israel doesn't even recognize interracial marriages and is basically at the standards of most US states before 60s, rather than before the 00s.

Don't give a sh*t. But admittedly I don't bother to go through the law books of random countries to find bad laws I can rant about.

Neither do I, it's just something I've seen brought up a lot recently now that Israel's in the news a lot and has been brought up before. And was reminded by the Israel LGBT thread because if you want to talk about gay marriage...Just about all American Jews familiar with the law (which of course is not all or even a majority of American Jews) also seem to find the law repulsive of course.

I'm guessing this was no more "random" than my very popular thread earlier in the day Wink

I'm pretty sure marriages between black and white Jews are ok, just like between Christians, Muslims, etc.

Yeah, other than being wrong about interracial marriage, you are right about the rest, and it's a HL.

Freedom law I guess. Indeed, the abolition of civil marriage (interpreted here to be marriages not recognised by some religious body) is one way of attempting to boost the number of people possessing at least a nominal religious affiliation.

Well Israel is an apartheid state, so apartheid marriage laws are unsurprising. But HL obviously.

It's not just religion, but also race.

Ironically Nurembergesque. Sometime when I think of Israel it's almost like the universe went out of it's way to be as ironic as possible regarding Israel. Even down to the same geographic direction earmarked for expansion.

Ahh, damn.  My reading comprehension skills were missing there.  My mistake.  There is more interracial marriage in Israel than in the US though.  (not that that changes anything)

That is, if a child has a Jewish mother the child is not supposed to be adopted by a non-Jew.  The requirement has to do primarily with religion.  The exception, which is a major one, is that an observant Jew can adopt a child from a non-Jewish family if there is a conversion process.

I'm not sure what the status of that bill is.

The Jewish family law was mainly developed around a millennium and a half ago, when Jews were not in a position of authority over any other people  - so the attempt to use it in the context of a modern state with a pluralistic population is bound to run into difficulties.    It is at least I gather more flexible that Islamic adoption law.

Bad law, but the beauty of Israel is that if enough citizens vote for a parties that want to change that law, they can change the law, such as the Classical Liberal/ Libertarian Yesh Atid or Ale Yarok, my prefered Israeli parties

Horrible, and I do actually care about this because I'm friends with a couple trying to get married and intending to live in Israel one and only one of whom is Jewish (and an Israeli citizen).

I thought Yesh Atid's main ideology was "whatever is popular"?
