It is reductionistic to simplify Maliki to being an American puppet. And besides: he's going to get the boot or the noose soon anyway.

Yeah. He's really more of an Iranian client if anything.

If the US had actually made the effort to install a bona fide American puppet in power in Iraq, we'd be hearing about the overthrow of Prime Minister Chalabi.

Or we could have gone old-school and just let Paul Bremer continue to govern the country indefinitely. Three cheers for Empire!

Admitting American states in the Middle East, in retrospect, might not be the most horrid choice.
