Why do you like FDR while supporting the Republican Party to-day?

Do you believe the Confederacy was in the right during the War of the Rebellion Civil War?

I like FDR because I see myself as a socially conservative economic populist. The Confederacy wasn't right to secede, just as the North wasn't right in pushing the south towards secession.

Would you vote Democratic if the national party supported fair trade instead of free trade (I.e. opposed things like NAFTA), was serious about passing tough financial regulations to reign in Wall Street's excesses, was less condescending in the way it talked about rural/Southern whites. (I.e. dropped the whole "if only you knew what your real interests were, then you'd vote Democratic" schtick), did more to increase the economic opportunities available to blue-collar workers, etc or would social issues still generally be the deciding factor with regard to which party you tend to support?

What was the thing that ultimately convinced you not to register as a Democrat?  Was it a last straw type thing or a general sense that the party no longer shared any of your values on social or economic issues?

Do you think the Republican party is right about most economic issues?  Or is it more that you feel both parties are wrong on those, but Republicans are more in line with you on social issues while Democrats don't represent your social or economic views?

Without looking it up and using only your own words and initial impressions, what does the term "Populist" mean to you?

Is affirmative action one of the main issues that contributed to your decision not to register as a Democrat?

What do you consider the core differences between the Democratic party today and during FDR's Presidency that make you able to support the latter, but not the former?

Lastly, what are the first three things that come to mind when you hear the word "Democrat?"  What about when you hear "New Deal Democrat?"

Are you implying that slavery should have been expanded in the territories?
