I read a "OMG Robin Williams dying is terrible and all, but what about (insert every horrible thing happening in the world" thread on FB and nearly threw the iPad across the room. This whining happens every time something like this happens, and it always drives me insane.

The death of someone like RW is a cultural touchstone - something that people feel an emotional connection to - something that is innately personal, of course we'd all like people to have that kind of reaction to these global crises ... but frankly, everyone would be exhausted.

Mork and Mindy grew up on, because he made appearances on Happy Days.

But Popeye was one film I will remember him on due to another popeye potrayer, Joey was on Full House.

Pharyngula has a gift for saying things in the most inflammatory, counterproductive way possible.  So if you want to go hate on him, fine by me.

But...uh... I just noticed that there's been no discussion about the Michael Brown shooting and its aftermath on Atlas far as I can tell (please somebody prove me wrong?).  And there's been not too much about it in the social media circles I see, compared to a lot of other recent tragedies.  Which, come to think of it, is actually kind of f**ked-up.  Don't think it ought to be out of bounds to point that out.

Why, because some white person shot a black person? We need to wave our hands?

Not to be an ass, but I'm sure the owner of that house is probably pretty annoyed.

Robin Williams killed himself yesterday, and CNN still devoted probably a good quarter of their coverage last night to the Michael Brown shooting.

Yeah, seriously, if Tumblr is the only way you heard about that, it's because you don't follow the traditional media very closely (which, don't get me wrong, is fine), not because the traditional media isn't covering the story - though it is true that it's probably getting less airtime than it otherwise would, and perhaps than it should.

I still find this bizarre, though:
I just noticed that there's been no discussion about the Michael Brown shooting and its aftermath on Atlas far as I can tell (please somebody prove me wrong?).  And there's been not too much about it in the social media circles I see, compared to a lot of other recent tragedies.  Which, come to think of it, is actually kind of f**ked-up.  Don't think it ought to be out of bounds to point that out.

And given that U.S. General Discussion is often full of threads about these sorts of incidents, not particularly characteristic of Atlas, either.

NBC Chicago actually did a story on the owner today. He is a plastic surgeon that liked the movie a lot and decided to buy the house. He knew Williams at one point, too, when their kids went to the same school.

I'm sure he thinks it is a great tribute. I know I wouldn't be annoyed.

Well fair enough.  I would assume there must be another point of entry.

Just spent the day watching Mrs. Doubtfire, Dead Poets Society, and Toys.  Might see if there's time for Hook and Aladdin tonight as well.  And that's not even the half of my rush list!

I was a little bit surprised by how bothered this news made me feel. Not many people will ever be remembered as fondly as Robin Williams will be. He was one of a kind.

Depression is a c*nt.

A few days late, but R.I.P.  I was extremely shocked and upset when this came up.  Apparently Williams had open-heart surgery and was suffering from Parkinson's in his final years...

Also, I better not be the only one here who remembers Flubber...

He was very public about the open-heart surgery. Yes, I remember Flubber, but I was too old for it.

Americans have a 86-8 favorable rating of Robin Williams.

That's higher than Abraham Lincoln's favorables.

Can only imagine the dark, miserable, unfunny lives those who disapprove of him lead.
