I'm going to post some random maps and charts I've made here.

First is a gif showing how each county's share of the state population has changed over time:

You can see how the various mining boom towns sprang up and promptly died, before the entire state (including Washoe, very gradually) gave way to the explosion in Clark county.

That's an awesome graphic Joe. Here are the raw numbers showing the Vegas explosion:

Clark County pop/Nevada pop

1930: 8,532/91,058
1940: 16,414/110,247
1950: 48,289/160,083
1960: 127,016/285,278
1970: 273,288/488,738
1980: 463,087/800,493
1990: 741,459/1,201,833
2000: 1,375,765/1,998,257

Here's a miscellaneous NV map I've not previously posted. It shows the highway connections between counties. Specifically it shows a county connection when there is a path between two county seats that can be made on regularly maintained state or federal highways that doesn't cross into any other county. The yellow lines show connections to significant populations in a county that are disconnected from the county seat. In this case one can't go from Tonopah to Pahrump and stay in Nye county, or go from Goldfield to Dyer in Esmeralda county without taking an unnumbered dirt road through Silverpeak.

Note, the lines are not intended to indicate where the county seats or actual connections are.

Nevada and Idaho are such oddly created states, like leftover states. I'd prefer to cut a giant line through CA to right above Clark County. Further divide the northern section into two "northwest" and "north east" sections (probably by continuing the Oregon/Idaho border) and give them to the nearby states.

Northwest Nevada + North CA.
Northeast Nevada + Utah.
Southern Nevada + South CA.

Nevada Territory initially only extended east to the 116th meridian, and south to the 37th parallel (the northern boundary of then New Mexico Territory, now modern Arizona.  The boundary was shifted west to the 114th meridian.  It was after Nevada became a state that the area south of the 37th parallel and west of the Colorado River was taken from Arizona Territory and added to Nevada.

The western border of Idaho is the 117th meridian.   So your proposal is almost identical to the initial division, but your Northwest Nevada is shifted west.
