(bonus points if you can guess where the list comes from)

You may vote for up to 5 so this doesn't turn into a Pryor vs Carlin thing.  And how do you think Robin Williams stacks up?

Pryor, Carlin, Cosby, Fey and Ferrell. Robin Williams would be up with the first three in that list.

Carlin, Pryor, Williams, Cosby, Louis CK, Patton Oswalt, Bill Hicks, Winters, Dave Chappelle, Martin.

That's my top ten. Carlin and Pryor are actually well ahead of the pack. The others are kind of bunched up in there together and the order can shift and fluctuate a ton.

Lorne Michaels isn't a comedian is he? I thought he was just a producer.

He did some stuff early on in Canada...I think he hosted a radio show or something.  I only know because Marc Maron has a weird fascination with the guy so asks every SNL alum that comes on his podcast to tell stories about Michaels.

and wiki tells me

I think I conflated the first and last thing there.

I feel like Eddie Murphy deserves a mention, he was pretty great in the 80's.

Pryor, Crystal, Carlin, Cosby, and Ellen are my choices. Though I don't think Ellen is as good as the other four. They're people that have a natural ability to make things funny in casual conversation.

The rest all feel scripted to me IMO.

Yeah if Ellen and Whoopi count, he should be on the list too.

Carlin runs five laps around the rest of the field, but Pryor, Fey, and Ferrell are very funny too.

Nobody guessed what the list was.  It is a list of people who have received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

And how do you think Robin Williams stacks up?

I remember watching his stand-up Weapons of Self-Destruction a few years ago. It was one of the most hysterical things I've ever seen. It may be too explicit to post, but I definitely recommend the part about designing the human body (of course, I recommend the whole thing).

I got four:  Richard Pryor, Bob Newhart, George Carlin, and Will Ferrell.  I tried to come up with a fifth, since the poll allowed, but I just couldn't.  My mother really, really liked Carrol Burnett, so I considered her, but in the end I stuck with the four I first noticed.

I got no bonus points, since I really see no connection between the members of the list.  Some are funny men, and some are incredibly lame, but somehow have managed to capture the American audience.  I assume that it's a list of folks that have won some prize for being funny.

edit:  okay, I see the subsequent post about the Mark Twain funnyguy award list.  Twain was pretty funny himself, but in a dry way that Richard Pryor probably wouldn't be able to relate to.  Don't get me wrong, I like Richard Pryor, and he tops my list, but why he would win a "Mark Twain" award is a mystery.  If I had to guess, I'd guess brevity.  It's the soul of wit, or so said Mark Twain.  Or maybe it was William Shakespeare.  Well, whoever said it, Will Ferrell is the best in that category.

My humor is hardly ever brief, so I guess I wouldn't qualify.  Mine is more along the lines of "A Rabbi, a duck, and a mushroom all walk into a bar..."  Funny enough, but I've never been accused of brevity.  (Well, except in my choice of underwear, but we've had that thread about a thousand times and I don't want to re-defend my choice yet again in yet another thread.)

Both Twain and Pryor were great commentators on the times they lived in.  The style was vastly different, but they both cut to the bone with jokes.
