Walmart is the commie - it has been surviving on government subsidy of its workforce, which has always been payed below subsistence level.

I've already proven that you can live off a wage of $6.50/hr, so be quiet already.

Actually we are talking about medical care, which is unaffordable at the Walmart level of pay - even if, as you claim, a Walmart worker can keep himself supplied with a hovel, hot dogs, and twinkies.  Walmart has been subsidized by the taxpayers since its inception in the area of health care.

If by hovel you mean decent apartment, and by 'hot dog and twinkies' you mean decent food - canned food mainly, but still decent food. Your main problem is that you have little idea how the real world works. If I was your father, you would have been kicked out on your ass a long time ago and not allowed to be a leech.

Wal-Mart should close all of its stores in Maryland in response to this, until the people of the state come to their senses and stop passing asinine laws.

If I lived in Maryland I'd be very happy to have them leave. I'm sure all other businesses would be too. Less WalMart is always good, hurting WalMart is always good. That's why I'm hoping those ing stupid parents who are suing WalMart because their daughter bought a CD with swearing there win even though they're ing morons who I'm suprised are smart enough to breathe.

They will in my area.  A new Target is opening 5 minutes away from the WalMart in my area.

I really hope Ehrlich vetoes this bill.

Because you don't support socialism, or because you think his veto will hurt his re-election prospects?

A little bit of both.  I can see how this will hurt Maryland in some ways.  WalMart may cut down their workforce substantially as a protest to this.  Losing jobs is never a good thing.  On the other hand, Id like to see Ehrlich veto the bill because the senate will probably just turn around and override his veto.  Making him look like a powerless asshole.

I eat canned food every week. It tastes just fine. Your problem is is that you are a spoiled rotten brat.

I actually prefer frozen vegetables over canned vegetables.  They taste so much better.  Canned meats are more palatable, certainly.

As for this type of legislation, I, as always, will continue to despise government intervention in our lives and their attempt to drive businesses out, as this bill clearly indicates a want to.

isnt ironic that maryland is dubbed the 'free state'

you just arent free to run your corporation the way you see fit, obviously.

id encourage wal mart to move its operations to normal states.

Target isn't a large company?  Wouldn't they also be affected?

This bill can only have two effects:
1. Some companies will cut their payroll or shut down entirely.  This increases unemployment.
2. Other companies will raise prices to cover the additional costs.  This increases inflation.

What you have is a perfect recipe for stagflation at a time when the rest of the country is slowly recovering.  Maryland will be left behind economically if they continue to pursue this kind of policy.

I'm not a big fan of Wal-Mart but if you don't like Wal-Mart, at least hurt them honestly.

I'm not sure if socialism is the word here as this is not government run a business. However, it is the government getting involved businesses, which is not true capitalism. So I guess it is somewhere in between.

If Wal-Mart has a lot of money (they do) and can afford to pay for health insurance for their employees (they can), then they should out of the goodness of their hearts (but they have no heart). But the government should not force them to do so.

You would think Wal Mart would have enough lobbying influence to stop this thing from passing in the first place.

Assuming that the figures being floated about how much they have to pay in Medicaid and the like are acciurate, it is possible that it makes fiscal sense for Matyland to pass the law.  It likely will have one of two effects should it become law.

1) Wal-Mart stops plans to build a distribution center in Maryland, and pulls all non-retail facilities out of Maryland.

2) Given the claims of how much Wal-Mart spends on health care as being already close to the 8% target, if the effect of the distribution center with its more highly paid employees with a higher proportion choosing to use Wal-Mart’s insurance plans would be to cause Wal-Mart to go ver the 8% figure, it goes ahead and builds it and avoids the tax.
