There was a stupid thread on the subject but last year...

Someone was going to be in his position at some point (i.e. the point at which someone actually got away with it), and it turned out to be him. Think it's fair to say that he acquitted himself pretty well, though he certainly had his bad points. A major historical figure, but no angel (and not a demon either). There were more interesting Reformers, of course.

Those wanting to knock Luther might want to note also his questionable role in the German Peasants War. Those wanting to do the opposite might consider his cultural contributions, which were considerable.

As a non-religious person I see him as a huge HP, though I can understand if people like him for exposing corruption in the catholic church.

Neither; Luther couldn't care less about issue like freedom, he cared about spreading his message, if he could have spread his message through the Catholic Church he would have done so, of course its corruption made that impossible, so he had to use other actors.
So the freedom he brought to the people was purely accidental.

At the same time he never tried to gain anything personal, and he condemned the results of his theology, when it hurt the poor, while he was very aware that he was partly at fault for them, and started the process which resulted in the first primitive welfare state (poor houses and state run ophanages, which while horrible was still better than people dying of hunger).

A complex figure, but his struggle against the Church was a righteous one, and the type of religious practice that he fostered was infinitely preferable to that which was prevailing at the time.

FF for teaching Sola Fide, and reintroducing the vernacular into the sacraments. Of course, he didn't go far enough, but we have Calvin, Zwingli and Knox for that Wink

As a Lutheranian I have to vote FF, all though he had his bad sides (his views on Jews and women and his role in the Peasants War in particular). But given the era he lived in, he was a positive figure and his struggle against the Church was a righteous one.
