I believe Dewey would have been more competent while McGovern a better person.

Okay, maybe Mike Johnson is a competent parliamentarian.

McGovern had about as much chance of becoming President as the average Atlas poster.

McGovern had about as much chance of becoming President as the average Atlas poster.

Yes, in the actual election he was trounced, but he one of only a couple dozen democrats to receive the nomination by a major political party, out of dozens of contemporaries and thousands of Democratic politicians over the past 180 years. Through that relativistic lens he is an "almost-president."

Not to mention, had Watergate broken immediately and the Eagleton fiasco been avoided, McGovern has a plausible shot.

Why not just ask "Do you lean to the left or the right?"?

I'll wait a couple more days then close this, want to give more the opportunity to vote, though it doesn't look like it will be close.

Looks like the best almost-President since 1945 is... McGovern!

I updated old threads in this series, and created the next-to-last ones (if it goes how I predict, there will probably be Eisenhower v McGovern). The ones I updated and just poll-locked should drop down soon enough.
