There are only 11 countries in the world that are in peace right now (no foreign conflict or internal conflict):

Latin America:
Costa Rica
Panama
Uruguay
Chile
Brazil

Asia:
Vietnam
Qatar
Japan

Africa:
Botswana
Mauritius

Europe:
Switzerland

Can someone explain some of these ratings to me?

According to this Brazil has no internal conflicts (LOL), and Mexico and Netherlands for example have the same rating.

Where is this from?  The list is ridiculous?  Japan has no foreign conflicts?

I took a look at the think tank's website. Apparently factors in the Global Peace Index include things like % of women in Parliament, government spending on education, and the unemployment rate.

Of course taking into account the Global Peace Index in it's entirety, a lot of these countries are nowhere near the top 10, but the article is specifically just looking at the internal and external conflicts categories.
But I think this doesn't make sense regardless of that.

Huh. It seems a bit ridiculous to me considering what's happening in Japan and Brazil now (and why are most of European nations noted as in conflict?). Chile is a mostly peaceful place in terms of major conflicts (we haven't been in an actual major war since 1891 unless you count our intervention against Argentina during the Falklands War), but it should be noted that Chilean troops are currently deployed in Haiti to serve as part of a peacekeeping force and the tension with the Mapuche could technically count as an internal conflict as well (although that depends on the political views one has here). And of course there's the whole problem with the Bolivians, although most people here simply ignore Evo Morales and his repetitive speeches and claims.

Most lists are just debating starting points, but this one is horrible.  Qatar is less involved in conflict than say, Finland?  HA!

Japan and Vietnam are clearly best pals with China and don't have any disputes over any islands with them.

We are now the 3rd most peaceful country on the planet, according to this report.

...

I don't really understand the list that the OP posted though:

Japan for example has no foreign conflict right now ? Isn't it in some geo-political power struggle with China/South Korea/North Korea/Russia since well a few hundred years now ?

Makes not much sense.

I suppose they consider all of NATO to be involved in conflict, otherwise it would be impossible to place, say, Iceland in a conflict (unless you count pot and pan demonstrations as internal conflict Wink ).

Probably the most useless list of this kind I have ever seen.

Is Japan actually fighting over its claims? It's not an armed conflict.

Qatar makes no sense on the list, though, with how they've been supporting revolutionaries.

Costa Rica doesn't have a military so they'd be a safe bet to stay on this list for a while.

Neither do Iceland but they still ended up off the list.
