While we're on the subject of pronunciation of politicians' names:
How do you pronounce Mary Fallin's surname?

[ˈfɔːlɪn] = like fallin'

[ˈfeɪ.lɪn] = like failin'

[ˈfɛlɪn] = like fell (or with a long vowel, Xavier Tongue)

[faˈlɛ̃ː] = French pronunciation

UPDATE:

The correct answer is:
[ˈfælɪn]
(which was not an option; sorry for that!)

Most of us - including me - got it wrong.

Thanks to Joe Republic and Grant.

It is. That would be option 3.

That's nitpicking...
So, option 3 is the closest, you think?

I can't read diacritics or whatever you call the pronunciation letters. I pronounce her last name the same way I pronounce Jimmy Fallon's last name.

Option 3 as described would sound more like 'felon'.

I'm certainly no expert in IPA*, but after a quick Google it looks like [ˈfælɪn] would be my choice (if it had existed), not Option 3's [ˈfɛlɪn].

* beer perhaps, but not phonetics

I wish I could delete this whole thread and start a new one. Sad

I've always pronounced it "Fal-in", as in Jimmy Fallon. That's probably wrong, but it's how I say it.

That's what I'd been thinking for 4 years. And so did a plurality of the other users. But it seems to be wrong:

I found a video of her pronouncing her name.

Joe Republic was right: It's [ˈfælɪn].

PS: Why is her voice so nasal? Is it a Southern thing or does she have enlarged adenoids?

PPS: I will never use phonetics again. Sad
