The attorney was managing the Public Integrity Unit, which is about corruption and other related crimes.

This is actually a much smaller deal than what I expected by "indicted", but no doubt this is bad news for Perry's ambitions.

Being indicted for abuse of power is small? He could be in jail for years.

I meant the actual deed, not the possibility of jail time or the charge.

They are going to arrest him if he doesn't turn himself in to be booked, mugshot and all. I say he will resign in the next two weeks. He is finished.

This makes Bridgegate look like...nothing. They must have something on him if they are going forward with the charges.

A politically motivated indictment by the DA whose funding Perry cut because she was arrested for DWI gets an indictment because her funding was cut?   Sorry. They have nothing on Perry.

Here's the full storry, see for yourself whether the indictment is merited, either way it's going to do damage.

This is actually a much smaller deal than what I expected by "indicted", but no doubt this is bad news for Perry's ambitions.

Let us all remember the huge qualification for anyone under indictment or arrest or even at trial: the four words that keep legal process from becoming a lynching:

IF GUILTY A CHARGED

Elected officials have no right to tamper with the legal process. Such violates the concept of an independent judiciary, a cornerstone of liberal democracy in the classical sense of liberalism, and one of the critical checks and balances of our system. Governor Rick Perry, even if he has done something that fails the stink test, has yet to be convicted of anything.

Of course we all need to remember that an indictment is only the first stage of prosecution, in essence the necessary and official statement that someone is in legal trouble.

Obviously, voters can show demand a higher standard of ethical behavior for an elected office than the legal system has for sending someone to prison, assessing a criminal fine, banning him from certain occupations, or denying him the right to vote or the prerogative of holding an elected office: they can vote against him and deny him his political ambitions .

It's very good when the horribles get their comeuppance.  Perry is a jackass that has been pandering to bigots as a political strategy for years.  Won't miss this little Bachmann-esque disease from the limelight one bit!

Not many people seem to think that the charges are credible. The fact that they are politically motivated doesn't mean that they must be wrong, but at this point there's no reason to believe that they aren't.

Well we know that he vetoed the funding. And we know he's entitled to do that. The question at hand seems to be the intent of the veto... which is rather subjective, to put it mildly.

Isn't this the same DA's office that tried to indict Kay Bailey Hutchison for having her aide pick up lipstick, and the very same that convicted DeLay of those charges of which he was acquitted? Yeah, this seems to be a political hit squad masquerading as a legal authority. For Hutchinson it was because the DA had wanted to be appointed to the senate vacancy she filled. Now it's because this DA refused to quit. It's a personal vendetta, again.

I mean it's not like Republicans don't do this sort of thing, either, but that's besides the point.

So we're supposed to prevent a lynching by using four words in all caps and red font, that make no grammatical sense?

I mean, that sounds more like a question than a motto: If guilty a charged what?

There seems to be little discussion of the facts of the case, here is a good overview.

I take my last post back. The more that comes out, the more I feel the charges are shaky. Still, the subpoena power might bring some skeletons out of the closet.

Rick is just freaking out because the legal proceedings will almost definitely still be ongoing when he leaves office - and then he'll have to foot his own legal bill instead of relying on the governor's office general counsel. Lack of money is the cause of much of Perry's behavior in office - he can use his power as governor to live the high life on the public dole and throw plenty of gifts to the state's corporate kingmakers in hopes of getting some well-paying cupcake corporate board positions after he leaves office.
