New York City for me, a decision already among the easiest I could contemplate; made all the easier by Austin being Number 11 and missing the cut.

Philly, easily.  (NYC is second, Chicago third, and it goes south rapidly after that.)

I don't care much for very large cities. The overcrowding leads to hassles. San Diego, if I could afford it. San Antonio, if not.

How did Atlanta not made the cut?

Chicago of those choices with Philly a close second.

It's based on cities proper, not metro areas.  Atlanta's city boundaries are fairly closely constrained (much like San Fran, Boston, etc.) while the metro is particularly sprawling and low-density.

Ninth largest metro area. If you dont go by metro area you get very artificial limitations.

Based purely on where I'd want to live:
1) Chicago
2) San Diego
3) San Jose
4) San Antonio
...
5) Dallas
6) Philadelphia
...God, now we're pulling teeth...
7) Phoenix
8) Houston
9) Los Angeles
10) New York City

Based on a more realistic mix of where I'd like to live and where the jobs are:
1) Chicago (Northwestern!  U Chicago.)
2) San Diego (UCSD!)
3) San Jose (Stanford.)
4) Philadelphia (UPenn!)
5) Los Angeles (UCLA!  USC.)
6) Phoenix (Arizona State?)
7) New York City (NYU!)
8) Houston (Rice?)
9) Dallas (Ehh...)
10) San Antonio (Zilch!)

Hard call.  I've been to all those cities and Chicago is the only one that really rubs me the wrong way.  I've only lived and paid rent in one of them:  NYC.  I did live very near (within 15 miles of) San Jose for three years and very near Dallas for five years.  I guess if my wife and I had to keep our jobs then I'd vote for Philadelphia, since it's the only one of them within commuting distance.  In an ideal world, either San Diego or San Antonio.  At the moment I'd rank them thusly:

San Antonio
San Diego
San Jose
New York
Philadelphia
Dallas
Los Angeles
Phoenix
Houston
Chicago

NYC, easily. I also like how, generally speaking, Texas has 3 cities in the top 10 but nobody gives a damn about any of them, especially foreigners.  When was the last time you heard San Antonio mentioned for anything?

Guess I can rank all of these:

1) Philly
2) NYC
3) Chicago
4) um... Los Angeles?  Really?  Yeah, LA by default.  Ugh.
5) San Jose
6) San Diego
7) San Antonio
8: Houston
9) Dallas
10) Phoenix
