Yesterday, I checked out The Viking Portable Library's Greek Reader from my local library. In the Introduction, the author described the following two fans of ancient Greek literature as a means of demonstrating the diversity of characters which that genre attracts:

Professor X. Reade Chair of Moral Philosophy. 59. Married. Three daughters. Religion: C of E (broad). Politics: Conservative. Lives in a small suburban house stuffed with Victorian knickknacks. Does not entertain. Smokes a pipe. Does not notice what he eats. Hobbies: gardening and long solitary walks. Dislikes: foreigners, Roman Catholicism, modern literature, noise. Current worry: his wife's health.

Mr Y. Classical tutor. 41. Unmarried. Religion: none. Politics: None. Lives in college. Has private means and gives wonderful lunch parties for favorite undergraduates. Hobbies: travel and collecting old glass. Dislikes: Christianity, girls, the poor, English cooking. Current worry: his figure.

Are Catholics not allowed to read Greek?

Professor X sounds like ChairmanSanchez, circa 2055.

Okay, maybe Mike Johnson is a competent parliamentarian.

Professor X's opinions on foreigners and possibly Catholics (depending on if he just dislikes the -ism in the abstract or the people who practice it as well) are objectionable, but so are Mr Y's opinions on girls, the poor, and possibly Christians (with the same caveat as Professor X's opinions on Catholics), so I'd go with Professor X on balance. Change some of the specifics and his general personality reminds me a lot of J.R.R. Tolkien, or maybe George P. Grant.

Yeah, Nathan,  was thinking along the lines of Tolkein too until I read that X was anti-Catholic.

While I'm not fond of Professor X's xenophobia and anti-Catholicism, he's better than Mr. Y on balance.
