Getting worse by the day.

By this, I mean the collective of American journalism. I am growing sicker by the day of CNN in particular.

You'll need to be far more specific when you say "the media."

Putting aside blogs and whatnot, the press is but a shadow of its former self - less talented reporters, less coverage, almost no investigative journalism, lots of low brow sensationalist pablum for the masses. What we have is a lot more coverage (except for newspapers, which are largely dead and bankrupt, just printing AP stories), with a lot less content that is worth a damn. So my opinion of "the media" assuming it has a meaning similar to the press, is that it totally sucks. Thank you.

What Torie said. I find I'm following the news less and less the past 10 years.

Not the media it was decades ago. Now there is different types of media people believe in when it may be false.

I don't know what's worse. The fluff machine or the reporters who think they aren't doing a good job unless they're subject is painted as major scandal.

Horrible right-wingers who try to convince everyone that they're too liberal.
They failed to criticize Bush for at least a year after 9/11, and then beat the drums of war for the Iraq war.

You have to look outside of the traditional mainstream media for any decent reporting. Somehow, Comedy Central, the Rolling Stone, and The Onion seem to have better reporting.

No fact checking. Absence of the requirement of two independent sources. Plagiarism commonplace. Ideological slant the norm in some news sources (most infamously FoX News). And the general public no longer gives a d@mn!

Mass media is, as a whole, terrible, and is simply another thing to add to the list of cack that is burying the human race slowly in a pile of sh**te. Nonetheless, I would query the idea of it being that much worse than it was say 20, 30, 50 years ago. I mean, newspapers and the like have always been biased outfits striving to make as much money as possible (or at least the vast majority). Print media has always been criticised by being sensationalist, biased and innaccurate. The proprietors of news sources have always been looking for ways to make more money and to advance their own pet projects.

The trouble with media generally today is that there's just too much of it. 24 hours news seems to have been a largely awful innovation, and so too has the internet, providing a platform for every Tom, Dick and Harry who thinks they can be a journalist or opinion former. These two things (plus the growth of tabloid journalism, although this type of journalism isn't really particularly new) have probably done more to harm the media as a whole than anything else.

Maybe we should return to smoke signals.

Nah, there were plenty of effective methods of communication prior to the Internet. Just without the pointless add-ons (Twotter, Book of Faces, the Puffington Post etcetera).
