This was a district that Romney and Cuccinelli got around 65% of the vote in. Once Puckett resigned, the Democrats had little to no chance.

Interestingly, the Democratic establishment's choice for VA-16 did not win the primary. The winner is seen as having a 'wavering position' on Medicaid Expansion, and she is perceived for being more friendly towards Republicans.
