...happens to be the name of a town in France ("La Mort aux Juifs").

The Simon Wiesenthal Center is asking the French government to change the name. Should they?

Yes, Castrillo Matajudíos:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castrillo_Mota_de_Jud%C3%ADos

In the French case, the town's leadership seems to be opposed to the idea though due to "tradition":

In Austria, there are 3 towns (out of 2400) with "Jews" in their name:

* Judenburg ("Jew's Castle")
* Judenau-Baumgarten ("Jew's Floodplain-Tree Garden")
* Judendorf-Straßengel ("Jew's Village-Street Angel")

What's so confusing?

That Sanchez never wants to read another criticism of Murica again because of an amusingly named historical curiosity with a population of what... fifteen people (?) in the middle of nowhere is a typically dense post from the kid.

I think he was referring, rather hyperbolically, to Europeans discussing racism as an exclusively American issue when western European countries have towns with offensive names (and more broadly, European countries' own problems with minorities).

EDIT: Made my own wording clearer.

I've seen Western Europeans be condescending on race issues towards Americans, just like the reverse is often true, but I think the myth of Western Europe being a place of complete racial harmony has generally died out amoung liberals.

The next thing you know, you are going to ban Catholic Church Smiley

Judenburg (the biggest of the 3 with 10.000 people) was in fact a target by the Nazis to rename the city to "Stone Pine City", but they never realized it for some reason.

How about as a 'compromise', renaming it to "La Mort aux Sionistes"? Wink

Sign...

"Europeans" don't say that racism doesn't exist in "Europe", we say that it's difference in ideology and practice than racism in USA, but for some reason you people are completely unable to understand what that mean, no matter how many times it's told, explained or example are given.

How does a place name just go unnoticed for centuries?     Do the inhabitants call it something else?

Considering there's a vast mountain range in Afghanistan named "The Killer of Hindus," (the Hindu Kush) I'm never surprised about the more un-PC place names in the world.

Likely not, it's a place name, we may think it offensive, but these people have grown up there for generation, and that's just the name of the place.

It's no different than a person who say they come from Hell in Michigan.The name are a little less PC (today, 40 years ago it would have worse to live in a place called Hell), but honestly that's only a thing people have to come to care for the last 40 years.

In that case the name is not used (the place is not a town contrary to what the first post says, the town is called Courtemaux) so it does not appear in their address or on the road signs, so I guess no one really gives a sh**t.

This. which is why Sanchez (hyperbolically albeit) is correct.

And who, I say WHO, are the 8 people who voted no?!? Shocked Angry  If you weren't trying to be "edgy" or "ironic" (i.e. trolling) and actually believe that, kindly explain.

Well if that's it, Sanchez is incredibly naive.

The idiots who think there is no racism in France are the same idiots who claim there is no racism in the US (that is, most of them are either racists themselves or people who play on racism for political gain).

Yep.

I never heard any of our Europe posters here claim there was no racism in their countries.  Far from it, the consensus I usually hear from some of our Europe posters is that there is actually quite a bit of embarrassingly blatant racism that would make even some Tea Partiers feel uncomfortable.

For the life of me, I could never see the Tea Party, the Constitution Party, or other American far right parties releasing an ad like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oczj6thd4CY

Which is not to say that the US is less racist than the UK, just that the aforementioned parties could never get away with something so obvious.  Though to be fair, the BNP has miserable performance numbers, so maybe this is just a note about differences in style between "coded" racists and outright ones.

The only idiots who claim that there is no racism in Europe are either stupid 16 year old MTV liberals or right wingers who make fun of such people.

Hell, MI or Intercourse, PA are just funny names, and are different than "Death to the Jews".
