I can give you an anecdote as well. My old baseball coach teaches at and is a union rep for Proviso West High School. Apparently, they do not have any policy in regard for students who register, but do not show up for school on the day it starts. It's simply up to the teachers to do something. Some of them write off the grades, some of them have them make it up in a certain amount of time, and some of them, like him, just give them a zero. Apparently, CPS is trying to work to fix this.
