Yes. Hating Christians doesn't make you left wing any more than Ayn Rand was.

Not really. Interventionist foreign policy doesn't equal right wing.  I mean, most right wingers don't use the "Marxist" to describe themselves...

And being hawkish on foreign policy does not make you right wing, nor has it ever.  The idea that being against interventionist war is "liberal" was fabricated the second the Iraq War (started by a Republican) became unpopular...

No (not an idiot).

Wasn't he an avowed, outspoken socialist?

He was in the 60s. He gave up socialism in the early 90s, but still considered himself a Marxist and a Trotskyist.

No, and I don't classify him as right or left.  He was just awesome.  A bit hawkish, but still awesome.

What exactly made him "cool"?

1-He was a complete f[inks]ing asshole.
2-He had terrible politics.

He was always a contrarian. He's probably the only person in the entirety of the United States to have supported Nader in 2000, voted for Bush in 2004 and then voted for Obama in 2008.

One can support full-flung military interventionism around the world and still be leftist.

Militance is indeed an essential part of being a radical and a Trotskyist, both of which he claimed to be.
