The point of this bill is to end our financial support for fossil fuel development.

Clause 3 is too heavy handed even for the stated purpose.

As for the stated purpose I worry it would drive up energy costs even with the higher utilization of alternatives here.

This whole  bill is heavy handed towards our most vulnerable citizens. We need to do the exact opposite of the entire bill. We need to expand our pipelines and build new ones. We need to have the goal to be an energy exporter. TNF, what's your problem witt Bakken fracked shale oil or Alberta tar sands oil? We need to continue their transport and drill in our own territory.

Good bill, but I'm not sure we should be meddling with Canadian internal affairs like that. If they want to transport some oil from Alberta to New Brunswick and the best way is through Minnesota, I think we should let them go through Minnesota and then glare at them for being naughty.

Tar sands oil is absolutely filthy and I like the idea of not constructing any new pipelines. I am, though, dubious about prices climbing because fortunately or unfortunately, driving is a necessity for the vast majority of people. And when the thermostat starts to compete with the rent or the mortgage, it's positively ridiculous and we should combat that. I think the trick is to find some balance there because until we have better and expanded electric power and other green technology, prices should be kept as low as possible.

I can relate to the spirit of the bill and the attempt to increase the use of alternative energy (and thankfully we're pretty advanced in that in comparison with OTL America) and stopping the federal aid to the expansion of natural gas or oil pipelines might not be a bad idea at all (I gather companies will still be able to build them on their own, and it's better to invest that money into other sources of energy), but I do share the concerns stated before, the bill would have the consequence of hurting quite a good amount of people during the winter (I doubt we have made enough progress for most houses not to need natural gas).

I'm pretty sure Clause 3 would be difficult to enact due to the Atlasian-Canadian Common Market Agreement, though I could be wrong.

I actually think Griffin may be correct in this, which is something I hadn't considered.

Provided that costs can be kept down, I don't have an issue with the amended bill. That was my primary concern at the start of the debate. Low income families should never have to be picking and choosing on what bills to pay.

I see TNF has introduced another bill on behalf of the Ambassador of the Russian Federation.

I see your delusions are not limited to the debate over public power.

He does have a point, as the slack would be picked up by the Saudis, Nigeria and Russia.

Indeed, that's something I hadn't considered... A bit ridiculous on my behalf given the obvious consequences for, say, Ukraine given the current context. Perhaps we should get rid of Clause 2 as well then?

Averroes raised a good point in the previous energy thread about natural gas. Certainly in RL, increasing the percentage of natural gas plants decreases carbon emissions substantially. If things are different in atlasia then this bill is obviously worth supporting - but we need to know things are different.

May I offer an amendment myself?

Not just stopping funding for gas and oil, but also increasing funding for renewable energy sources. What do you think?

The previous amendment has been adopted. I'm going to declare Cranberry's amendment friendly. Senators have 24 hours to object.

Well, I support Cranberry's amendment, I certainly can't oppose more funding for renewable energy sources.

May I ask you why in particular you oppose this? What is wrong with this bill in your eyes?

I'd still like to hear just how much of atlasia's energy comes from coal before we pass this bill, but I suppose reinvesting the money in renewables means that this bill won't increase carbon emissions.
