Am I the only person who's getting sick and tired of the Ice Bucket Challenge?

If you care about ALS, just donate some ing money to ALS research. Sorry to pour cold water on this exciting trend, but pouring cold water on yourself does no good to people with ALS.

Well, you have to admit it has spread awareness much better than almost anything else could have.

If you did any research whatsoever, you'd find that the foundation has raised over 20 million more dollars this year than they had raised at this point in time last year.

No, no... this was a good one (although I don't think for the reasons NYE intended).

Am I the only person who's getting sick and tired of the Ice Bucket Challenge?

I've only seen one of them, so I guess not.  It was at a picnic last weekend at a big park where all the masters of my son's Tae Kwon Do school grilled burgers and hotdogs and everyone brought a covered dish.  One guy out near the baseball field was starting to draw a little crowd, and there was a woman with a camera, so we walked over to take a look.  Then I saw another woman preparing a huge bucket with ice.  It was one of those large, orange Gatorade coolers and she had the top off.  I assumed that it was going to be a staged pouring.  Like, when football coaches have the bucket of icewater poured over them.  Like that, but staged, and with a Tae Kwon Do master instead of a football coach.  So sure enough she pours the big bucket of icewater on him and the other one snaps a picture.  Then, she says, "Oh, I don't think I got a good shot" so the guy changes into dry clothes and they do it all over again.  By the second shot, a really big crowd had gathered around and I overheard one person ask another what was going on.  Apparently it was a stunt for raising money or awareness for ALS.  It was all somewhat entertaining.  I guess if I saw it a second time I'd probably start getting tired of it, but that was the only time I saw it.

I think I was already aware of ALS, though.  I knew someone whose father died in a very slow and painful way from that condition.  Back then we used to call it Lou Gehrig's disease.

Some people are clearly missing the point (e.g. not even mentioning ALS in their videos), but if you're petulant and self-absorbed enough to whine about a campaign that has succeeding in bringing public attention to a terrifying disease that is usually ignored, get help.
Given how a vast majority of people I know who have so far done the ALS challenge are shameless, shallow attention whores who were also huge proponents of the Kony 2012 circus, I generally have a negative view of the thing. I'm glad the foundation raised $20 million, but I am not going out of the way to dump a bucket of water on myself for six people on Facebook to press "like."

I will admit I am no less sure what ALS does exactly than before this campaign started.

I was one of those people who got very worked up against the "Kony 2012" thing. And where are the Chibok schoolgirls, anyway?

Normally I hate viral fads as much as anybody, but:

That's right, the ALS Foundation has raised nearly 36% of the money they raised in all of 2013, in just three weeks this summer.

So frankly, the nay-sayers can suck it.

How many people have taken the challenge? Someone should give $100 for every participant.

Also the Church is opposed to the Ice Bucket Challenge:

I wonder if this means us Catholics shouldn't pay our taxes.

from the gospel according to Saint Mark:  "And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marvelled at him."

So I guess you're not off the hook.  Tongue

This of course assumes that donating money to ALS research is a good thing, which isn't given (though in this case I think it may be)
