I think because I am not able to imagine non-consciousness.

Although one time when I had a severe flu, I was in a deep sleep, and suddenly I realized I couldn't see, hear, or feel anything. It just felt like I was a sphere of consciousness, and I had this feeling for about 20 seconds. Suddenly I jolted up in bed, woke up, and took a loud deep breath because it felt as though I had not taken a breath in a while.

Because our brains are constantly processing everything around us, and thinking is just part of that process.

I'd be bored to death if I didn't.

Professor gave us a pop quiz on day 1 with only one question: 'why?' I wrote 'why not,' walked and dropped all my class. Should be getting a refund next week. Going to use it to buy a one-way plane ticket to Mexico City and meet up with a friend of mine who's a hitchhiking 'fregan,' let him teach me to live without money. That's my punishment/reward for thinking.
