What's truly odd is Buchanan pointing out Watson's role at that rally he mentions in his first two paragraphs.  Watson remained an unreconstructed segregationist far beyond what most other politicians of either party in the late 60's and early 70's did.  Watson was a prime example of a racist southern Democrat who found a welcoming home in the Republican party once the Democratic party was unwilling to tolerate him any further.

Is that article 100% true?  No.  But it's as true, maybe truer, as the Democrats' preferred Disney-style history where the parties have, over time, completely reversed roles (seriously, how can a thinking person believe something so simplistic) and the final act of valor on the part of Northern Democrats and "liberal" Republicans (the signing of the CRA) neatly sorted all the evil racists into the GOP, even if it took decades.  If the realignment of the South had been all about race, it would not have began well before the '60s.

It's also a total fabrication of modern liberals (which, to their credit, has now been accepted as fact by many) that being racist/supporting segregation is an inherently "socially conservative" thing.  All conservative has meant in modern politics has been opposition to the New Deal or "policies of the Republican Party" ... Anything else is purely conjecture.

P.S. "Culturally" conservative usually means preserving tradition, but you could theoretically be culturally conservative and politically liberal.

Well, this is bunk. It might be what people align in their heads, but what people think is far from the actual truth.
