I would say Paul gives the Republicans the best chance to maintain control of the House, but I still cannot imagine Rand Paul as President of the United States. He's a nice guy, though, which is a rarity among the field.

A race with Rand Paul would have a lot of uncertainty.

He's a relative newcomer with some unorthodox views so he could be defined in a way that makes him toxic to swing voters.

He could also draw in the people who don't typically vote, and provide a welcome contrast to someone who has been a national figure since 1992.

If Democrats think Hillary Clinton has a tremendous edge in a standard election, they might have a preference for conventional opponents.

This wrongly assumes Americans are not warmongers at heart. A majority of Americans love the idea of bombing enemies and love the military.

Rand Paul will get outright booed at GOP debates during foreign policy questions.

Paul actually seems pretty skilled at using emphasis and packaging heretical ideas to make them more salable to GOP rank and file. But it's still not enough and, like anyone who wants to win, he'll flip and water down his views as much as he needs to to make it through a primary. He's already been doing this plenty. Then, if by some freakish stroke of luck, he won the nomination, his differences with Hillary  on foreign policy would be muted. And people don't vote on that anyway, as others point out, but it would affect elite opinion and you'd have Rudy Giuliani and Elizabeth Warren sitting next to each other on Hillary's campaign bus.

Ron didn't get booed in 2012, I think the GOP is moving in the Paul's direction, so I doubt he'll get booed this time around either.

Rand Paul is the most petulant politician I've ever come across.

Like an overgrown frat boy.

I think most Democrats want to run against someone like Paul or Cruz both are too conservative to be electable and are more likely to implode as candidates.

That's not quite true, though he eventually got applause in the end by his supporters. Though I will give you that he got booed a hell of a lot less than in 2008, and he got a lot more cheers and applause. The more liberty minded faction of the republican party is the fastest growing movement and I sure hope its fast enough to make Paul competitive in the primary.

This wrongly assumes Americans are not warmongers at heart. A majority of Americans love the idea of bombing enemies and love the military.

Actually this isn't true, 47% want a less involved foreign policy and only 19% want more involved. In 2001, it was virtually the opposite. I know just being less involved isn't equivalent to not bombing, but less involved means less intervention, unless Americans don't understand that.

Honestly, there's been plenty of polling that shows Rand has no youth or Democratic appeal, and he is already flip-flopping on plenty of his "earnest" positions to show he is a true "Reagan" conservative. Who would've thought a man who made up his own medical credentials would have questionable positions on "the truth"?

I think not.

Seriously, he should wait until he's more established rather than so early, but Obama ran during his first Senate term. (Although part of the reason he was was because he's black and had a major hype machine backing him, which Rand doesn't have by virtue of being yet another WASP.)

See things like this is what causes people to make fun of the Democrats on this forum.
